“You don’t have to worry about me, Jack.” She tried to smile. “It’s just that being penniless and homeless is preferable to spending one more minute with my parents.”
“What about friends? Is there anybody who might let you crash for the summer?”
“Neko is going to Europe this summer. She’s really the only person I’m close to. I haven’t had much of a chance to make friends because I’ve been so focused on school.”
“That’s not true. We’re friends.”
“We are.” Their friendship was still something of a surprise to her. She had seen Jack interact with his theater students, and they always had an easy repartee. But as far as she knew, she was the only one with an open invitation to come to his office whenever she had a problem. And his cell phone number. “I meant besides you, of course.”
