38 Snowy Battles

Once caught, Mint brought out Abomasnow to examine it. As it turned out, he was very powerful already. It was quite shocking, actually. But seeing it made me think of what I would face soon. The eighth gym leader, Wulfric. I assume he would have one too as it's a mega Ice-type. But I wonder if I can do anything against it…

"Hey, Mint. Why don't we test out the strength of your Abomasnow?"

"What do you mean?"

I pulled out a pokeball and tossed it in the air. "I think you know what I mean now, don't you?"

"Ah, I see what you mean. Well then, let's do this then! Abomasnow, let's get ready to battle!"

"Alright Fronja, let's go!"

"Abomasnow, let's do this! Go for a Brick Break!"

"Show them what you can do, Fronja."

Abomasnow lurched forwards with his fist glowing orange. As soon as he swung his fist, though, there was a black flash, and Fronja was gone from his spot. Abomasnow was confused for a moment, but then he was slashed in the back by a blade of water. He was launched forwards, but it seemed as though there was no attacker.

"Abomasnow! Use Protect!"

When Abomasnow hit the ground, he quickly regained his footing and put his arms into an X position. Suddenly, a barrier was created around him on all sides. But Fronja was still missing.

"Now charge up a Solar Beam!"

Abomasnow began to take in the little light that was in the cave. It was going to take a while to get a full power Solar Beam, and I was sure Fronja knew that. And yet, what he did caught me off guard. He appeared behind Abomasnow and used Ice Beam. Not a strong one, but rather one that was extremely cold. I could feel it from where I was standing. He froze the barrier around Abomasnow, stopping light from reaching him.

"Blast it, now!"

Although it wasn't nearly as strong as it could have been, Abomasnow fired off a pretty powerful Solar Beam, bursting through the ice barrier around him. Albeit in the exact wrong direction. The heat from the beam melted the ice, but that left an opening. Fronja's eyes began to glow gold, and he released a rainbow-colored beam from his hands. I immediately recognized the attack as Extrasensory, and I guess he's been working on it for a while. It seemed near perfected.

The attack hit Abomasnow in the back, launching it forwards. Fronja dashed to be in front of Abomasnow where he would land. Fronja's fist glowing orange, he punched Abomasnow in the stomach, launching him into the cave wall. He then peeled off the wall and fell to the ground, making a dust cloud. Mint rushed into the cloud to check on him, but Fronja was confident that he had already won.

I could hear something happening in the cloud, but I couldn't make out what they were saying or doing. That was until I saw a bright light escape the cloud of dust and a shout rang out. A shout I was not expecting.

"Abomasnow, Mega Evolve!"

"Fronja, back up!"

Fronja jumped back as there was a burst of white light, clearing the dust and causing me to cover my eyes. I could feel ice falling down from above me. That's how I knew I wasn't hearing things. Uncovering my eyes, I saw the sight I was not expecting.

Fronja was staring into the eyes of a Mega Abomasnow. Things just got serious.

"Fronja, I'll take control from now on. Now, the only way we can win this is with speed. So let's get fast. Use Quick Attack."

"Abomasnow, use Blizzard!"

Ah, shit.

Fronja began to glow white before starting to speed around, blending in with the surroundings. But then, Abomasnow roared, causing the snowstorm around it to merge with the new storm coming from his mouth. The Blizzard hit all of the surroundings, even knocking Fronja down temporarily.

"Now, use Wood Hammer!"

Abomasnow rushed forwards, with one of his arms glowing light green. He slammed his fist down on Fronja, causing an explosion of dust and ice. I thought for a second that Fronja might've actually lost. But then I remembered that he's smarter than that. When Abomasnow lifted his fist, the only thing squashed was a doll. The same that appears when a pokemon uses Substitute. I may not have known where Fronja was, but I knew he was still up and kicking.

"Fronja, use Cut!"

Out of nowhere, Fronja appeared behind Abomasnow, a blade of water in his hand. And then…

He slashed. For a second, I thought I saw a water dragon bite down. He slashed the huge icicles right off of Abomasnow's back. They hit the ground with a huge thud, causing an explosion of ice and dust. Abomasnow roared in pain, but it stayed standing as Fronja disappeared and reappeared back in front of me.

"Abomasnow, are you okay?"

There was a roar in response.

"Alright then! Go for Wood Hammer again!"

"Dodge and use Extrasensory."

Abomasnow dashed forwards, faster this time. Presumably because he didn't have those huge icicles on his back anymore. But this time, both of his arms were glowing green. He clasped them together, ready to slam them on Fronja to take him out in one hit. And as always, Fronja disappeared in a black flash to the side, though something was off. I could see Fronja with my bare eyes. He was slowing up. I knew that we needed to finish this fight soon, or else he might faint from exhaustion.

Fronja fired off his Extrasensory at Abomasnow, but this time, it did less damage. I could easily see that. I wasn't sure how we could finish this soon, but if anyone could, it'd be Fronja.

"Fronja, use Quick Attack to speed up again. Then use Cut."

"Abomasnow, use Energy Ball!"

Fronja began to glow white and sped around, trying to avoid a hit. Abomasnow raised his hand, and a ball of green energy began to form. And it formed rapidly. Fronja dashed towards Abomasnow with a blade of ice in his hand, and as he did, Abomasnow fired off the Energy Ball at Fronja. Fronja swung his blade to meet with the Energy Ball. And after multiple shockwaves were sent out from the clash, Fronja cut through the Energy Ball. His momentum didn't stop there, though. He kept going, turning his blade into water. And right when he was in Abomasnow's face…

He slashed. The slash caused Abomasnow to reel his head back, leaving a perfect opening. Fronja dashed forwards one last time, his hand glowing orange. He hit Abomasnow right between the eyes with a powerful Power-Up Punch. Abomasnow fell backwards and hit the ground with a large thud, causing another explosion of ice and dust. Fronja jumped backwards, and when the dust settled, Abomasnow had lost his Mega form. Fronja raised his fist in the air, as he began to fall forwards, passing out from exhaustion.

"Come on back, Fronja. You did amazing," I said, bringing him back to his pokeball.

"You did too, Abomasnow. We'll just have to train harder so that we can beat him next time! Come on back," Mint said, seemingly happy.

"Are you happy or something? You may have given me a real run for my money, but you still lost. I thought you'd be frustrated at least," I said, confused.

"Oh, trust me, I am. But now I know how you fight, so when we face off against you in the league, I'll have an edge!" Mint said excitedly. That's pretty smart.

The two of us left the Frost Cavern and went back to Dendemille Town, where we realized that night was soon going to fall. We said our goodbyes, and I found a nice hotel to sleep for the night. I got a room, then went to the pokemon center to make sure Fronja was healed up. We were going to travel the next day, after all. Once I was sure of that, I went back to the hotel and quickly drifted off to sleep.
