The drive wasn’t a long one, so Rob talked fast. Silence lingered in the car for too long. A swift glance across at Lee’s face told him the man still looked pale, drawn, and it wasn’t all because of his ankle. He was no idiot. Why had Lee been on the other side of the door if not on his way into the room? The papers…Lee was dropping those off.

Sure, Lee tripped, but the fall should have spilled him inside. Why would he turn away? Had he stood on the other side of the door long? How much did he hear? If nothing, what happened when Rob helped Lee up? The moment shared was more than enough to explain the awkwardness now between them.

“Lee,” Rob broke the silence. “What happened back there…” He shook his head, struggling to choose words not to make the situation worse. “It’s not—”
