35 The Mate We Failed To Protect

(THIRD POV)

Falling, floating, screaming, repeat!

Falling, floating, screaming, repeat!

It was pure torment for Alpha Fisher. With no company as the wolf hadn't returned after he bellowed an order at it, even his pleadings were for nothing. With the little hint of hope he had in his broken heart, he thought perhaps the place wasn't safe for the wolf.

To say Alpha Fisher was humiliated by the situation would be an understatement, there was a moment he even peed at himself. For all of his life, he never felt scared. He had been lucky to be surrounded by people who loved him, if it weren't his mate, it was his beta or Alpha Aspen.

Sweltering, his throat was dry. His body had no energy left to even lick his lips. He thought of the love he had for his sister and his daughter. He could stay happy whenever Marina visited him from City Blue, they would go fishing and even if it was once in a blue moon, the sweet moment would sustain him for his next life.

His fear for himself dissipated as he thought of his loved ones, he thought of his pack and how cold they were at times towards him, and sometimes they were lovely. He was always unbothered by their attitude towards him as they didn't disrespect him and stood in their lane.

It was one thing to hide a murderous killer in their beloved home, and it was another to force the pack to talk happily to him. They had freedom, freedom to do whatever they wanted. Was it guilt? Was it his nature? He was unsure of that.

Flailing in the air, he appreciated so much that his eyes had decided not to open, Alpha Fisher didn't want to look down with fear the confirmation would slap him for the trillionth time, they were fucked.

The poignant breeze was the least of his concern. Hell, even his tear glands had long forgotten its work. He couldn't cry. What good would it do anyway? "Freedom, when are you coming to me?" He quizzed himself.

Freedom. He needed that at the moment. It smiled down at him like a clown, mocking him for what he brought to himself. Why did he think the idea of snatching his daughter's freedom would go unpunished?

Freedom was Alpha Fisher's second name, he didn't take it lightly. Even after the rumors about Beta Shark and Luna Audra began, he hadn't yelled at everyone to stop gossiping. The pack was a family, and in a family, everyone had a voice. To say what they wanted and do whatever they loved.

Of course, it hurt since he would spend all night begging his mate to stop crying. It hurt more since he saw how the pack loathed his Luna and his beta. Even with the endless backstabbing, not once did Alpha Fisher summon his pack and reprimand them.

He had his reasons not to.

One: The trust he had in his mate was unbeatable.

Two: He knew Beta Shark better than anyone and vice versa.

Three: He couldn't bring himself to stoop so low and belittle himself to be the same as the pack.

"Was it wrong of me to do that? Was I supposed to talk to them?" Alpha Fisher wondered with his eyes still tightly shut. His hand went to his belly and asked if he would ever get to eat or drink or pat Luna Audra's hair as she lay on his stomach after their sweet lovemaking.

[Such a pervert, we are in immortal danger, and the only thing you can think of is lovemaking?] The wolf was back.

[You have been listening? I thought this place wasn't for you?] Alpha Fisher retorted.

[I had to come out. And who said it is for you dear screwed alpha? For the millionth time, your decision not to reprimand the pack on their gossip about our mate and beta was wrong and unreasonable. Why did you do that?] Hissed the wolf. It hadn't been on board with his decision to stay silent, for the wolf, it was unfair, and if an opportunity had risen, he would have shown the pack how angry he was.

Unlike other alphas, Alpha Fisher was calm, had control over his emotions, and not once did he allow his sentiments to cloud his judgment. For years, he was unsure if it was in his nature or if it was Alpha Aspen's behavior rubbing on him.

Just as when it came to freedom in the pack, he allowed his mate to be who she was. He wasn't possessive or jealous or a tad bit unfaithful. He was an exceptional alpha to an ungrateful pack.

[Stop thinking of the past and let us figure out what is happening inside the pack. Has Marina arrived yet?] The wolf was in a bad mood and Alpha Fisher didn't have to ask why. It was anxious about what his better half was fairing.

[I don't…]

[Really? This was your plan and not once did you wonder what you would do if it didn't go as planned. Can you imagine what the pack is saying to your mate? The mate we failed to protect? The mate you let Beta Shark sleep with every night? The mate you abandoned…]

[Shut up!!!] Alpha Fisher's screams pierced into his ears, as he opened his eyes, he began falling, and for the first time, he lost his cool toward his wolf. [Stop talking nonsense, stop talking. Stop talking, and fucking leave me alone!]

[Your wish is my…]

[No, no. Don't leave, I am…] Alpha Fisher gaped when he heard his sister's weak voice asking, "brother, why can't I feel you?"

Below, a blazing yellow ball was coming on his way, Alpha Fisher opened his mouth but nothing came out, he rubbed his face in frustration, sure it was his last day of breathing the pungent smell and things crawling on his body. He wondered, "Bedelia, I am right here. Bedelia, how is Marina? Bedelia? Bedelia, dear sister, I am here. How is Marina?"
