A Glimmer of Opportunity

As consciousness slowly returned to Akira, he found himself in a dimly lit room, with Mai sitting nearby, her expression a mix of relief and concern.

"Hey there," she said softly, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "You had everyone worried."

Akira managed a weak smile in return, feeling the weight of his exhaustion. "How long have I been out?"

"Just a day," Mai replied. "But you really know how to make an entrance."

Carefully, Akira pushed himself into a sitting position. He felt weak, as if his energy had been completely drained. His gaze shifted to the crystal still clutched tightly in his palm.

"It's been quiet since you collapsed," Mai said, her eyes on the crystal. "Whatever that thing is, it's got some strange power."

Akira's memory flashed back to the icy path and the chaos of malfunctioning technology. "I didn't mean for any of this to happen. The crystal..."

Mai's voice was reassuring. "We'll figure it out, Akira. You're not alone in this."

As their conversation continued, the topic naturally shifted to their shared aspirations. They talked about Eden, the prestigious training academy renowned for producing graduates who often went on to become members of the Nova Corps. But for Akira, Eden had always been a distant dream.

Mai's eyes gleamed with determination. "Think about it, Akira. If we get into Eden, we'll be on the path to becoming Nova Corps members ourselves."

Akira's heart swelled with hope. "It's a long shot, especially for someone like me. You know the entrance exam—the magic qualifications and theory tests. I wouldn't have qualified. Plus...Eden isn't ideal for Mages especially not ones that are weak."

Mai's gaze softened, her tone earnest. "But that doesn't mean you don't deserve a chance, Akira."

With a sigh, Akira leaned back against the pillows. "Yeah, but the crystal's power... it's like it's offering me a chance I never had."

Mai's eyes widened in realization. "You mean..."

"I could use it to level the playing field," Akira said, the idea slowly taking shape in his mind. "If the crystal can enhance my abilities, maybe I could actually stand a chance at Eden. Combined with intense training we could both be elites in Eden!"

Mai's expression shifted from surprise to determination. "We'll make it work, Akira."

As the day unfolded, Akira's strength gradually returned. The crystal lay beside him, pulsing with an otherworldly light that seemed to mirror his newfound hope.

"We should start preparing our applications," Mai suggested, her eyes bright with determination. "The deadline for Eden applications is approaching."

Akira nodded, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. Eden was no longer an unattainable dream.
