01 | Sophie

Rain.

It was on a rainy day that a young boy named Max Zoloman, got a companion. His dad, a major engineer in AI and robotics was testing his newest creation for his company, Althing.

The company was number one in the robotics and computer science field as it would create helpful tools for everyday life. Even going as far to build the first working robotic arm on a patient that lost his arm in Afghanistan back in 2003.

With that, they soared up and its everyday robotics models from cleaning to making small contraptions that could control a house, was sold.

The company was happy, its needs were being meant by the government as it would help injured soldiers and veterans while Althing would get faster testing procedures.

But they knew, they weren't done. Max dad, Adam, was a brilliant man who was tasked on designing the first ever, Humanoid AI, by his boss that could be placed in every household and help their humans.

But that technology was not yet available, is what Adam believed. But that idea was stuck in his mind. It always kept him distracted because the idea of that was somewhat horrifying but also helpful.

Elderly didn't need to risk their health just to get a bag of groceries or a child being in an accident because the parents weren't there.

It could also…be a parent, for those children that don't have their parents with them all the time. Adam thought about his child, that he has to leave everyday with a nanny because Max mom, his wife, died in a crazy shoot out in the mall.

He really tried to think about the cons and how the government and public opinion would not let this be created in fear of privacy not being respected but….he wasn't thinking rationally.

He was thinking emotionally, even if he reminds himself that he's an intelligent man. He's still a father, and a father wants what's best for the child and he thinks it should be a parental figure that could be there for him.

Now having the motivation, he decided to try and if it doesn't work then he should consider his work hours. Maybe he should've consider to do that from the start right? But it was already too late.

His brain was firing information and movement to his body as he spent years. Preciously 4 years just to get the first real working prototype.

Adam was currently sitting in his garage that was molded like a lab. It had equipment, tables, mirrors and most important of all, Internet.

He was putting the finishing touch on his invention. He stroked gently a blue thin brush around that faded into purple. Making a thin circle around her back.

"Ha…Ha!"

He was overjoyed, in front of him stood a "female" humanoid. She was currently suspended on some type of platform with cables holding her arms with tubes connecting from her back to several equipment.

Adam looked at the first Humanoid AI that the planet has never seen. This technology could be so great that it's comparable to when transportation was invented but it could also be deadly like the atomic bomb.

The female was currently wearing a light shade of brown criss cross overall dress over a white shirt with long sleeves. The dress came down to her knees as she had black stockings with black ballet flats.

Her brown hair was let down reaching to her shoulders as her green eyes kept expanding and closing like a camera lens. Her skin was a healthy pale with little to no imperfection.

4 years and this was what came out but this could be considered the most scientific and futuristic thing on this planet. What really took long was the programming, the numerous codes, systems, the algorithm and commands.

It was designed to be a perfect care giver, to adapt and learn. To simulate almost like emotions back to the people connected with her, almost like a mother but not at the same time.

"I did it…." He stated as he rubbed his eyes as got up from his seat and stood in front of Series One Processor Hyper Intelligent Encryptor.

Or Sophie for short.

"Now…Now all I need to do is start it so um, yeah let's do that. Here we go…." His voice trailed off as he began to unplug the tubes that entered her from behind and lowering her down until her feet touched the hard surface.

Adam felt nervous and had every right to be after numerous trials and errors. He finally invented his purpose that he started 4 years ago.

At first it was because his boss asked him but it later turned into giving his child a loving parent, something that he tried to do but became difficult when his own child reminds him of her so much.

Typing some stuff into the computer one last time and pushing the space bar, a small symbol of a power button, that was behind her ear lit up that was light blue and kept dimming down and up. Indicating that it was on.

Adam had eyebags and dark circles, his lips were dry, his trash cans were full of food, broken glasses, parts, papers and fire extinguishers.

Rubbing his hands, his phone started to ring. Grabbing it from his pockets, he saw the caller Id, it was from "Samantha". He huffed out and closed his eyes for a bit.

But after a while the call faded but it soon lit up, the same person calling.

"What's up Sam" decided to answer it because she was the person who kept checking up on him. She was a colleague who offered help and some outside of the box ideas.

"Adam, hi how are you, are you still in your garage?"

She asked and her answer was found when he kept silent

"Jesus Christ Adam, it's 1 in the morning almost 2. Shouldn't you be in bed?"

"No? It's Monday."

"It's Friday…Please do not tell me you spent every single hour in that damn lab. What about Max?"

"He's doing…fine. I been trying but, it's just so hard Sam…..he looks so much like her"

"It's been 4 years Adam, you mourned for her but haven't moved on huh?"

"…"

Adam heard a big sigh from the other side of the call as he could imagine Samantha putting a hand on her forehead and shaking her head.

From work to home to work. That was how Adam spent his 4 years like that.

"Adam"

"No it's been good. I been really trying, I went to his soccer game….never knew the kid was good at kicking."

He let out a dry chuckle

"So you have been with him?"

"Yeah but like I said, it's hard"

"Look Adam, I'm here-"

"Uh Sam, it's been a long day I'll talk to you on Monday in our office yeah?"

"Oh. Sure yeah okay"

"Okay thanks bye"

"Bye"

Adam ended the call as he huffed out and looked back at Sophie. She was already turned on and looking at him.

He got startled and jumped a bit as he phone fell from his hand and landed on the ground, broken free. Quickly looking at the computer that was on a table and then back to her.

"Sophie. Zoloman" he said calmly as the robot tilted her head and made a small noise that resembled a machine moving. Which in fact she was but she was so much more than a machine

"Voice pattern recognized. Starting systematic sequence.Hello Mr.Zoloman"

Her life like voice was heard while also her eyes scanning him with information coming into her view as well as his emotions and brain activity.

Her pupils that were actually high grade military cameras were expanding and then contracting.

"Let's test this out…" Adam then took a phew steps back and faced her as he told her to stand in front of him.

And that's what she did with little to no sound. Only her flat shoes could be heard on the steel floor while her arms stood by her side. Her short statue reached 5'6 while her strength exceeded human capabilities for emergency situations.

But he also had to test her capabilities in finding answers and her ability to compute.

"Okay so, Sophie, In triangle ABC, the measure of∠B is 90°,BC=16, and AC=20. Triangle DEF is similar to triangle ABC, where vertices D,E, andF correspond to vertices A,B, and C,respectively, and each side of triangle DEF is 13 the length of the corresponding side of triangle ABC.What is the value of sinF?"

In Adam eyes all he saw was her tilting her head and looking at him as in less than 2 seconds she started to speak. But in her view tons of information came while reading and scrolling through all that, she picked the fastest and easiest way to get the answer

"Triangle ABC is a right triangle with its right angle at B. Therefore,AC is the hypotenuse of right triangle ABC, and AB and BC are the legs of right triangle ABC. According to the Pythagorean theorem,AB=➗20(over2)−16(over2)=➗400−256=➗144=12 Since triangle DEF is similar to triangle ABC, with vertex F corresponding to vertex C, the measure of angle ∠F equals the measure of angle ∠C. Therefore, sinF=sinC. From the side lengths of triangle ABC,sinF=oppositeside/hypotenuse=AB/AC=12/20=3/5 Therefore, sinF= 35. The final answer is 35 or 0.6."

Sophie said her response smoothly and gently as her voice was somewhat soft but also somewhat ever so hearing that robotic noise.

Adam was happy and surprised as most people couldn't even understand a single world and even if famous mathematicians around the world did hear his question it would take them minutes explaining and finding the solution.

"Okay…What is after death?"

Sophie stared at Adam for a while with her lips curving upward very small as she took a few seconds to answer that

(AN:PLEASE TAKE WHAT I SAID NOT SERIOUSLY.!!!!!! I AINT TRYING TO SPIT ON ANY RELIGION or DISRESPECT. I SUPPORT YOUR BELIFES BECAUSE THATS WHAT YOU WERE RAISED TO BELIVE IN…..I also ain't trying to get flamed)

"…Nothing. Theories have suggested that believing in something, is where you will go. For example, a person who believes in Christianity, will be going to either hell or heaven but a person believing in Hindu faith will reincarnate because that is what they believe in. But believing in nothing, what awaits that person is possibly, nothing. Like what they believe in."

Adam quickly wanted to change the topic as he didn't want his invention to go down that road and immediately went to the computer to put on restrictions.

After a few minutes,Adam went back to look at her and see any errors but there weren't none so he had to ask her purpose

"Sophie.What is your task?"

"To protect and care for .Blank. learn, recalibrate myself, and maximize my objective function of protecting the child from any harm, Emotionally and physically. To be highly intelligent, responsive and to be the best guardian"

Adam nodded and smiled as he finally done it. Her mission was to serve and protect, nothing more. The reason she said blank was because she hasn't been introduced to her "objective".

Adam code was brilliant and perfect.

To perfect.

Being tired and finally having the drug of happiness and accomplishment, he didn't realize that he made her to good.

But it was perfect. What's so bad about a person doing their job perfectly?

(So first chapter what you guys think?

I really want to make this and like I said I will still make it even if you guys don't like it but it's gonna be hard and challenging. But this is gonna be fun because I haven't read a book or novel like this so wish me luck because I will need it.

Also, this chapter was 2000 words, so expect the chapters to be this long and expect some chapters to be short because I really write them but then I don't know what to put to make them longer. I will have a chapter about useless information of max going to school, taking out his pencil, writing notes, going to lunch and then back to his house…. See?

Anyways,

Expect chapters to be on the weekends I will try to upload at least 2 every week but I will guarantee my promise of 1 chapter a week.

I will post one chapter every Saturday so look foward if you like this book.

But yeah that's all.

Have a great day guys and see you tomorrow where I'll post one more chapter to make you guys have 2 chapters.

Next chapter
