1 Then

Autumn

I laid with my back hugging my new double bed as i bounced my thoughts on the white ceiling.

I've been in Cape Town for five nights and four days and I've been bored out of my mind.

I knew I was living in a suburban area which was automatically paired with silence but this was driving my sanity away. The place might as well have been a full ghost town. If that even made sense.

The following day was Saturday so I was definitely going out or I would lose all senses I had left. Maybe to Century City or perhaps V & A Waterfront; two of the few of the malls suggested to me by mr Ferguson, my mom's boss. I was sure he was a nice man. I based my conclusions on the little time I had spent with him on mom and I's arrival and the couple of times when my mom was talking to him on the phone regarding what was expected of her.

I didn't think he knew how much he brought joy to my mom's heart when he told her she could bring me along, even though he had specifically said he wanted a live in helper with no kids.

The only reason why he agreed to my coming along was because I was old enough to not cause any problems.

Either way, I was forever grateful. I also respected him for saying helper instead of maid. Which was still a big degrade from what we came from.

Monday was school and I was scared more than I was nervous. I wasn't just in a different state or a different country. I was in a different continent all together. I was a foreigner. My mom and i knew no one at all. That is the change we wanted though, so we had to take it as it is.

My mom. She seemed to be doing fine. I complained about how little i saw her and how much she worked. My mom though, she got up at seven everyday and grinded her way throughout the day. She didn't complain, ever. If she had to do something and she had no choice, she did it.
