3 A Life of Low Worth

'I knew him well. Especially after being with him for five years in my previous life. He may not repay kindness, but he would definitely seek revenge, especially for the smallest slights. Now, all I could do was to try to make amends, hoping that he would spare my brother for my sake in the future.' Murong Yu thought.

The sight of Murong Yu in tears touched the two guards. They thought that she was truly kind-hearted.

At that moment, Aman quickly arrived with Dr. Wang.

After exchanging formalities, Murong Yu said, "Dr. Wang, please tend to his injuries quickly!"

"Ah..." Dr. Wang gasped upon seeing the wounded man. "I'm afraid there might be no hope for him."

"That's not true. I've just checked; his heart is on the right side, not the left." Murong Yu hastily corrected Dr. Wang.

It was something Ji Chengxuan had told Murong Yu in jest in their previous lives—that his unusual anatomy was why he had managed to survive.

Intrigued, Dr. Wang examined Ji Chengxuan and said, "Indeed, it is."

Having confirmed there was hope, Dr. Wang didn't say more and started administering treatment.

Applying the medicine would be painful; wrapping the bandages would make it worse. The wounded man, Ji Chengxuan, was jolted awake by the agony.

When Ji Chengxuan opened his eyes, he saw an ethereal beauty looking at him with compassion. Murong Yu said, "Don't move. Let Dr. Wang do his work. You'll recover from this injury soon."

Murong Yu's soft voice made Ji Chengxuan wonder, 'Am I dreaming or I'm dead? Why else would I see such a divine maiden? But surely a man as tainted as I would end up in hell with demons.'

"Ouch!" Ji Chengxuan was pulled out of his musings by a sharp pain as the bandage was knotted. A cold sweat broke out on his forehead.

Now, Ji Chengxuan knew this was not a dream. He also recalled that the divine maiden was none other than the eldest daughter of the prime minister. He had once seen her from a distance; she was as celestial as the moon in the sky.

"If not for Lady Yu, your life would have been in grave danger," Dr. Wang said, finishing up the bandages.

Murong Yu looked at Ji Chengxuan.

Ji Chengxua's face was as pale as paper, but his eyes held the same untamed ferocity. He glanced at the hem of her skirt and looked down. He said, "I have but a worthless life. It's not worth your effort, my lady."

All Murong Yu could see were Ji Chengxuan's trembling eyelashes, thick and long, masking his emotions. It chilled her to the bone, knowing how ruthless he could be. The more malicious and resentful he felt towards someone, the more nonchalant he acted.

"Your injury was caused by Jin. I will make sure he's punished. My family doesn't have a history of mistreating people like this." Murong Yu assured.

Ji Chengxuan slightly parted his lips and said, "You're too kind, my lady. To serve the young master and work to the point of exhaustion is an honor for me."

Murong Yu swallowed hard, at a loss for words.

Aman, who was fearless due to her naivety, interjected, "Do you know that Lady Yu personally cleaned you up? You were as filthy as a beggar, and she didn't even find you repulsive!"

Aman had inquired because she saw that the man was now clean. To her surprise, it was Murong Yu who had done it herself.

Murong Yu couldn't help but look at Ji Chengxuan, hoping to see some kind of emotion in his expression.

Yet, Ji Chengxuan continued to lower his gaze, reiterating, "I have but a worthless life."

Finally, Murong Yu turned to Dr. Wang, "Thank you, Dr. Wang. Please continue to come by for his dressing changes."

"There's no need for me anymore," Dr. Wang said, packing away his medicine. "This man may look as skinny as a bamboo pole, but his constitution is remarkably strong. Most would have died instantly from such injuries. These are wound dressings; change them every three days. However, keep an eye out for a fever."
