Chapter 4 - Snake Eyes

Despite my fathers words this dream was not the violent wrath I would have expected. The room I was in wasn't making me afraid, it was more of it studying me from the shadows. I wasn't sure what was as I couldn't see it or anything within 2 feet of my vision.

This was the trial my father warned me about. Yet he seemed so serious and yet this seemed easy I catch whatever's in the darkness I am free to go.

I walked forward to be greeted by two spikes from the creature one missed and the other landed next to me centimeters away from my eyes. I jumped back and reminded myself that I am in a child's body.

I moved forward testing my luck as two spikes went right into my eyes. The thing in the darkness snarled and proceeded to forcefully pump a mana signature into my eyes and head.

Waking up from the purest of nightmares I grasped at my eyes. Stuck in shock I had to calm myself down. I thought of a warm feeling as if I was by a fireplace. Next to me as if answering a call a fireball was next to me giving its warmth.

Once I was calm the fireball exhausted itself. Confused I went down the hall and tapped on my parents room. The one who answered was a very tired Grey.

"Are you okay Rin?" My father spoke as if I had interrupted his greatest sleep.

"I had a bad dream." I said to my father who suddenly became aware of what I went through.

"Rin did you dream about something that was going after you?" My father asked as I responded with a nod.

My dad spoke with me outside as I described a big thing in a dark room that was after my eyes. He only responded by showing me his right eye that had changed its hue to a dark red instead of his regular brown.

"This is our bloodline ability that thing was after you to give you this. It lets you hit with pin point accuracy." My father explained but only reminded me that my mother also should have a bloodline ability.

Seeming to key in on this my father said that I should have effects of my mothers ability but not the ability itself as that was given up.

"Your mothers bloodline ability had the effect that gave you a increase in mana control." My father told me how it worked yet not what it was.

Satisfied for now I walked back to my room to practice my new found abilities. I sat in front of a mirror to see what my eye would look like. So I started my experiments.

I tried to feel the ability and activate it. Nothing. I thought how to change it seeing if the ability from before would work. Nothing. Maybe a spell like my father chanted before he activated it. But I don't know what the spell was, nor how to say it correctly.

I eventually tried pouring mana into my eyes through my body and it gave me a answer, I knew what to say it was right there in my head. So I spoke what it told me to speak.

[Snake's Eyes]

I immediately saw things through a different shade not only one eye was turned both were. My dark blue eyes turned a light purple and silver. I could see farther and even see the general area of mana points on another person.

This ability awaking made me happier than I wished. The color in my eyes fell back to normal after a while. Meaning that I don't have a unlimited time with them despite having a so called mana increase.

The sense of accomplishment is really a thing I could get used to. Even though I remember it being midnight I soon saw the sun peeking through the dark starry sky. I got some last second training of my core in before walking downstairs.

Being greeted by a very sweet old lady who lead me into the cafe area of the Inn, the roughness of her hands showed the years of dedication to something before cooking. What startled me though was my father who came up behind me and patted my head.

"Morning kiddo." My father said through the groggy mess that was once his well kept hair.

"Morning." I said while looking for food as awakening and training my eyes and body left me starving.

As I walked into the café I saw my mother who looked a bit annoyed at my father. My attention was caught by the massive amounts of food here despite besides the staff we were the only ones here.

The old lady helped me pick out what I wanted and walked me over to my mom. Thanking her I sat down and ate.

"Slow down Rin you are going to end up choking." My mom said while grabbing a drink for me.

The food here is way better than where I came from. Its masterfully made as if it was to be eaten by the greatest food critic. The eggs were perfect and the bacon was tough and sweet. I could eat this forever, I had already eaten a second plate before my father looked like he wanted to say something.

"I know I will slow down." I said anticipating my father to tell me not to choke.

"You have quite the appetite for a little boy." The old woman said while sitting down across from me and my mom.

"Yeah he is something huh, he awakened at such a young age. Im glad to have raised such a genius." My father said while taking a sip of his drink.

"Master Clover must be happy to have such a grandson." The woman said while smiling at me, which only added to my confusion as I looked at my father.

"Gah, that old fart. He could care less ever since my brother had his children." My father noticed my confusion.

"Who is that dad?" I asked my father wondering about my supposed grandfather.

"Well my dad, your grandfather, is a important person. That little floating city that I read to you about. He is the appointed Lord there." My father talked him out to be a evil guy. What bothered me more is the fact that I was basically royalty and no one told me.

"By your expression Little Rin your father forgot to tell you this." The old woman asked me while turning to my dad.

"It wasn't my idea alone to tell him Helen, Kate and me were both sure that he would have a better life away." My fathers words sounded as if he was getting scolded by his mom.

"Yes but you could have told him where your family resides. Even for a brat you have to think about things in the long run." Helen said through her smile.

"Yes but he has to go back soon anyways, the kid already had, that, dream." The tone of my father shifted when he talked about the dream.

"I already did that weird chant." I said in a proud tone which was only met by my father go into a coughing fit. My mother sat up abruptly.

"You did WHAT!" My mother looked at my father then me. Only for Helen to take her into another room.

"God kid you are one hell of a monster." My fathers words were said in a joking tone. More proud then surprised.

"Can you try to use the ability?" My father asked as I sat back down across from him.

Without uttering a single word I looked inside of my mind. Looking back at my father I activated it.

[Snake Eyes]

My worldview shifted becoming more sharp and clear as if I had perfect vision with mo flaws.

"Dear god." The color left my fathers face as my eyes reflected off of his glasses.

I got tired and deactivated the ability. Making my father stop studying my face so hard. Seeing how my fathers gears in his head turn he looked at me.

"Well looks like I am going home sooner than expected, son do you know why everyone freaked out just now?" My father sat back with his hand over his eyes.

"Not only one eye but two of yours are effected. The color of your eyes in this mode are silver to purple, unique coloring that has been seen before. The eyes show and enhance someones sight but also can read someones guilty mind." My father rubbed his temple. Deep in thought he immediately sends someone to fetch writing equipment.

My fathers words sounded like I was going to be moved somewhere else. The area that my grandfather lived in was called Drathion. Apart of a floating chain of islands apparently floating naturally and is powered by the atmospheres mana.

"Are we going to visit my grandfather?" I asked as my father scribbled away at a piece of parchment.

"Rin the amount of potential you have is something I have to watch as a father, meaning no matter how much I despise my father we must go to where he lives." My father was done and let go of the two papers which seemingly vanished as soon as he let go.

Despite asking many question my father simply told me to go upstairs and pack, reminding me about a sour memory from when I was young in my world. My father took me outside to meet some of his friends from awhile back in their adventuring days.

I was greeted to a group of warm smiles, well mostly my father was approached by a man holding a sword.

"Hey Grey ya' damn dog how is it going." The mans booming voice was followed by s warm smile.

"God dammit Roy get off me you smell terrible." My father talked harsh but meant well as he introduced everyone.

"This is the group me and your mom were apart of before you were born. From this lug head Roy we have Jamie our quiet mage, Agatha the woman whose being held back by our assassin Frey and the lady behind them is their current leader Hera." My father smiled as a thin archer walks out from the protesting Agatha.

"Sorry about Agatha she has a tendency to bear hug small children and the fact that your Grey's child doesn't help." She held out her hand and greeted me the only thing I noticed was her hand had calluses from her wooden bow.

I smiled and was greeted by a rough hug from Agatha who squealed as she hugged me. She was then pulled off of me and apologized for her behavior.

Going inside my father got my mom who had calmed down and lightened up by seeing her old friends. As soon as Agatha saw my mother she asked for a battle but was quickly dismissed as not to destroy anything around here.

The mood shifted however when they discussed how far I had actually grown.

"Geez so you needed us to protect him while going back to your home?" Roy rubbed his chin and looked at their quiet mage who started mumbling to himself.

"G-Grey your son awakened four months after his fifth birthday? Even the gifted don't awaken that early. You also said h-his bloodline ability awakened yesterday and with not only one eye but both. What a g-genetic curiosity." The mage stumbled through his words as he thought about how much of a potential I have.

"My father had already said that he wants to view it for himself and the sooner the better. So we might as well get it over with." My father responded as he was uncertain what awaits us when we get there.

I was pushed to my room by Helen the In keeper telling me to let adults talk. As my door to my room closed I started training again until I was bothered later.

All I know is that I must be ready for whatever happens.
