Advent: Life's End

In a fantasy world where humans are one of the weakest species, they are forced to rely on the strongest among them to fight against vicious monsters and other demi-human and heteromorphic races. In reality, the few "strong" among them have barely managed to gain any actual strength, their magical and physical abilities posing little threat to the dangers to come. After receiving a vision of the future where he is obliterated along with his city, Cylas must travel a vast world full of monsters, enemies, and political rivals to achieve impossible levels of power while attempting to discover who the true threats to humanity are. Armed with a ring that allows him to see levels, will he manage to overcome the odds and save the people he cares about, or is the foreseen future truly inevitable? Will release 1 Chapter every day. EDIT: Due to circumstances the book is currently taking a break so I can build a back-stock of chapters. New Adventurer

Staring at his leg Cylas attempted to use the ring again; however, nothing popped up.

"Why isn't it working..." he muttered to himself.

Looking at his hand he quickly realized that the ring his Uncle gave him could be the cause. Taking off the ring Cylas tried again and the text immediately popped in his vision.

[Cylas Lagier]

[Level: 20]

[Race: Elioud]

[Talent: Angelic Blessing – Body is reinforced and has an affinity with the Divine]

"So, is this how mages see the information … or is it unique to this ring?" Cylas pondered.

Previously Cylas had heard of powerful mages that had the ability to see how strong someone was. Apparently, the mage in Stormthorn's party had the ability, but he had only heard it from rumors. Finishing look at his task bar Cylas noticed his talent.

"How am I a talent holder now?" - Cylas pondered, Talents were an extremely rare gift obtained at birth. While most of them were useless they were generally separated into three categories.

Normal Talents were talents that around 1 out of every 75,000 people would have. They were mostly useless in fights but in some cases provided small benefits.

Exceptional Talents were talents that provided noticeable boosts or effects to the user that could assists them in battles and other situations.

Finally, Legendary Talents were talents that gave life changing benefits to the user. Compared to the previous two talents the difference was exceptional. Most talents in this category went unregistered as no one wanted others to know what their talent was.

Looking at his talent along with the description he assumed it was Legendary, but he had no way to be sure. Casting the screen away Cylas plopped down onto his bed looking out the window. His mind and body felt exhausted after the fight with his Uncle and he wanted to take a short rest before heading to the Guild.

"I managed to beat my Uncle but now I don't have a job and any money." Cylas worriedly thought to himself.

"What if for some reason the Guild decides I can't join. Or once I join no one has a party that I can join..." Cylas started to panic thinking of the worst possible outcomes.

Currently he had saved up around 5 Gold coins. Even if the worst case were to happen, he could live off those for almost a year if he spent his money sparingly. Otherwise he would likely have to buy equipment to prepare for taking a quest.

"I'm needlessly worrying " Cylas sighed, plopping back down.

Ever since the talk with the angel from his dreams he had been on edge. Sliding the ring his Uncle gave him back onto his finger he tried forcing himself to fall asleep.

*************************************

Slowly opening his eyes Cylas groggily got out from his bed. Glancing behind him he looked through the window at the sun. It seemed he had slept for about an hour as planned, putting his shoes back on Cylas looked in the mirror at his eyes. To him they seemed strange but it would likely seem normal to those more used to dealing with various people.

Estimating that it would take him about 30 minutes to get to the Guild Cylas grabbed the sword his Uncle had given him and walked through the door. Immediately upon exiting crowds of people entered his vision. The streets in the city were usually filled with people at this time of day and it was easy to get swept away.

Compared to the other cities in the Shralnar Alliance, Ethos boasted a larger population due to being away from the borders of the other kingdoms and the farthest city from the Unexplored Depths to the south. The only city with a larger population being the Capital in between all six cities. Due to the Alliance's weak army they relied on Adventurer's to take care of monster subjugation and other problems they couldn't handle.

This boosted the Guilds reputation in the Alliance and high-ranking adventurers were considered Hero's among the people. Though adventuring was a dangerous job civilians often glorified the profession due to the lives saved from it, this resulted in around 4,000 adventurers residing in the Alliance alone.

Lost in thought Cylas looked at a group of about 15 soldiers patrolling the streets. This was a familiar site as the City Ruler wanted to keep up the appearance that he was prepared to protect his civilians. Looking at them Cylas suddenly got an idea. One by one he used the ring on them to try establishing a level for how strong on average the soldiers were.

One by one Cylas was shocked at the level the soldiers had. Previously he had wondered how he compared to others since his Uncle had only allowed him to spar with him and Lucius.

"They're so low?" Cylas said almost questioning the ring. From the 20 soldiers that had just passed they had an average level of around 5.

"Maybe those soldiers are just weak?" Cylas asked himself again.

Before he made any assumptions Cylas decided to try and find a better base mark to better assess his own strength. Remembering the level difference between his Uncle Cylas had previously decided that a difference in levels alone did not determine the outcome of the fight; however, levels weren't something to disregard either.

Even with the help of his Talent and the bracelet he barely had managed to close the 6-level gap between himself and his Uncle. Either way in the grand scheme of things everyone in the city wasn't nearly strong enough for what was to come. Trying to avoid depressing himself Cylas decided to start looking around at the people walking by to see what level they averaged.

Most of them had a level near 2, excluding a few exceptions most civilians remained extremely low. Finally, the Guild could be seen in the distance with various adventurer's coming in and out of it. Various plaques hanging around the necks of the adventurer's signaled what rank they were.

Feeling nervous and excited Cylas eagerly rushed towards the guild. From this point on he would be registered as an adventurer.
