Chapter 49: How To Save a Witch II

Impressed with a future duke turning up in his office, Advocate Brunel cleared his day to spend on Nene's case. The short, rotund man had calmly taken down all Amelia knew, then he had disappeared for a candle-mark or so to talk to the guards about the complaint they had received.

'Right, let us go,' he said upon his return.

Amelia's stomach grumbled as she stood.

Damon remained in his seat. 'Where to?'

'Why to the prison of course. I need to talk to the accused to see if I can mount a defence. Come, come.'

'Do you need us there?' Damon queried.

'I would not normally take you with me. But time is of the essence and sometimes the guards there like to follow procedures to the letter. I should have placed a request in writing with the prison clerk, and well - '

'Having the future duke turn up with you might grease the wheels a little,' Amelia provided.

'Why yes, exactly.' The man smiled.

'I am meant to be catching the boat across to Hand today,' Damon said.
