Abyss of Silent Heroes

Reluctant of her roots, a 20 year old Magee and a Captain's daughter - was sent by Lolo Sibal to UST in 1938 to study Philosophy. Way back then, Lolo Sibal was a survivor of the 1918-1920 Spanish flu pandemic and who was accidentally trapped , along with the Captain for twenty years in the legendary cave of Kabang. Interestingly, the Captain left to him the wealth for Magee's education and returned to the United States. In September, 1941 Magee has heard from a UP friend that the the war had to rise on December of the same year so she returned home empty-handed and stayed with her family. Without them knowing, her father, the Captain who survived has returned to the Philippines for another military mission on the same month of September, 1941 and assigned the 25 year old 1Lt. George of the infantry and the in-charge of the platoons in combat to take care of his daughter in whatever means. One day, during the early weeks of the opponents' occupation, one of its officials named Hakanori proposed to Magee through her mother and agreed for the wedding. Magee was against to it despite her multiple attempts to escape. Accidentally, the night before her wedding, she fell into the abyss nearby their house and found herself the next day that she was with the Filipino guerrillas together with the American and German soldiers. She noticed the Captain personally but only in a short encounter and there - he was gone. In the fight for freedom under the foreign occupation, 1Lt. George used a different tactic and studied very well the terrains and natural habitat of the place. He led the disarming of any opponents patrolling and collected all their weapons and uniforms, worn by Filipino guerrillas in disguising. He also applied sharpened bagacays in holes, pulleys, and ropes in all sorts, throwing rocks, powdered some poisonous plants and made antidotes, used herbs and root crops for their survival and even dug some exit points and tunnels all over just to reach the cave of Kabang. Alongside with Magee at war where he only started as his guardian through the Captain's request had smoothly twisted and subtly turned out that he became madly in love with her. One day...

Alexandra's Statements

Before approaching the middle part of the tunnel where Alexandra, Bruno and Eunice (Alexandra's bestfriend) have waited, the hissing sound of strange noise blasted above. But George was a little relaxed and positive to directly listen to them despite the grueling ambiance in Kabang.

" Good morning, who's Alexandra?"

" I...I am Alexandra, Sir."

" Good to see you. Can you please tell us everything about finding that boy." George smiled to pacify her tension while Alexandra was holding Eunice beside her.

" Ah...it started when everyone arrived so exhausted inside station one, Sir. When I was about to settle myself on a bamboo bed that they said belongs to your brother-in-law, I noticed that something slowly moved beside the sack that's too close on the rocky wall. To my surprise, I immediately removed the blanket and found that chilling boy, sweating and trembling while looking at me in fear. "He was a Jap," I thought. So I was kinda feeling like a bomb and almost decided to choke him with my bare hands while thinking how my parents were killed with his clan's bayonets. But...but...he was just a child, so innocent, like I was before. Sir, I'm sorry I failed. I can't do it." She was crying then.

" Well its alright. What you did was just prim ang proper, He's not our enemy, its this war. So thank you for preserving his life and didn't act right away out of anger and revenge. Though we have fears now of having that boy around but let's all find a way to endure this agony on human understanding. Now, Bruno, grateful to you for bringing Alex here too. Good job everyone." George inhaled and drew closer to Sr. Sibal.

Still inquisitive but Alexandra talked to Eunice whisperingly.

" I thought the most handsome lieutenant in the world would throw us out. Eunice, I was nervous and tensed while narrating, huh!" Alexandra sheepishly said.

" Me too, I was a little nervous while listening though my role here for coming is just to support you. But look! true that the lieutenant is a Filipino-American, his wife must be very lucky too for he's so calm and cool. And take note, instead of preventing my self to look at him but I landed staring at him like a magnet. His eyes...they're sleepy and magnetic, haha." Eunice softly said

" Shh...he's coming back." Alexandra said.

" Hey ladies, I told Bruno to return both of you to station one and be more careful, continue to be vigilant and keep your strong support to our combatants." Then George waved a hand on them as Bruno started a walk and they followed.

George returned to the granite house and saw how her wife took good care of the boy that much.

" How is he?" George curiously asked.

" He's interesting. Magee smirked.

" Really? What made him interesting. But hmm...what is he doing?" He whispered to his wife while gently pressing her shoulder.

" He's praying before meal. He told me he's afraid but will not tell anyone about us. He can speak English a little and told me his mother is an American-Filipino and only his father is a Jap. But he lost his mother and only his father took good care of him. That's the reason why he was able to reach the mabolo tree to play and at the same time, got attracted to the tree's sun-rays colored fruits uphill. He said he was playing by the mountain when he saw the yellow-orange mabolo fruits that later made him escaped from the headquarter and secretly climbed. When he reached above and tempted to explore the place he found a small grassy path going beside the water falls in the middle of the mountain then he was trekking on a rocky small surface going to the water drizzles till he finally got in behind the water falls, inside station one. I asked him if how many days he'd been alone in that place but he could not give me the details and just said, " its been a long time." I also asked him if how did he survive inside and he smiled upon telling me that there's a container of sugar and ivy clinging ( sayote leaves) beside the cave's opening while drinking the water that gets in. Poor 7-year old boy, huh!" Magee sighed.

" Indeed, he's just adorable for surviving that way. So look at him, he knows how to pray that deep." George smirked.

" Yeah, he said one of the soldiers who was with his Dad taught him to do it before meal. Interestingly, he said he must excessively pray for gratefulness, for eating sweet potato today after several days of being trapped with routine leaves, sugar and water."

" Such a brave child." George whispered while looking to the boy who started to excitingly touch his meal. By observation, the boy was decent and following a table etiquette and manners.

" He's not just a civilian, he's really the son of one of the high ranking Japs' officials. This is insane! and we have accidentally captured this boy, staying by our side right now. Hmm." George's thought as it jumbled inside his mind.

" So...what do we need to do with him."Magee sighed.

" If we return him, we do not know what comes next, he has the potential to divulge our secret, he's still young and if we kill him, he's never been an enemy himself, its his father. The danger is, our security - once we release him. So I decided to free him after the war, if we can endure and survive that far then he can go back home For now, we'll hide him in room number 7, we have toys and books there.

" Hmm...its a good idea. I agree." Magee smiled and waited for the boy to get done.

" I will leave to you the responsibility of teaching him the Filipino ways. He must learn - our ways if he want to survive in this war." George smiled as he caressed her face with his hand.
