A Vampire's Tale

The world of Norvak isn't for the weak. A land where might makes right isn't for the faint of heart. A land where different species battle for supremacy and the defeated either enslaved or exterminated. The continent of Revix has witnessed the rise and fall of many species. With a relatively peaceful period being established a little over ten thousand years ago. The result of this peace is the separation of different species. The land of humans, Cyntros, covered most of the central part of the continent. The lands in the north, Aterix, gave shelter to the elves and other creatures of light. The south held the creatures of darkness and it's original name, Rimul, long forgotten. A land that the humans had long dubbed, The Darklands. To the east was an endless desert where the banished and hated lay their bones. A place where nature threatens both predator and prey. Yet most feared of all was the west, a land of giants and titans. Where mountains vanish and valleys form from the movements of it's inhabitants. On the edges of The Darklands, the greed of men sends a group of hunters to their demise. The lone survivor, Milas, is turned into one of the ruling species of The Darklands, a vampire. With a past clouded in mystery and an uncertain future, Milas does all he can to survive. With the potential to become more than he could have ever imagined, Milas faces all threats that come his way. "The right to live is a privilege that only the powerful have access to. I don't appreciate others having that privilege over my life. And I'll do what I must to earn my right!"

41 How Am I Alive?

Milas' eyes shot open as he took a deep breath. The first thing he processed was the blinding pain coursing through his body. The worst of it came from his stomach and felt like a flaming dagger was being twisted in there. Milas growled in pain as he tightly grabbed the closest thing. He used so much strength that he felt whatever he was holding crack.

"AAAHHH! You broke my arm you idiot!" Milas heard Asher's voice beside him but he couldn't process it as a sharp pain came from his fingers. He would have reacted to it if the pain from his gut hadn't shifted to his chest. Milas' lungs were burning and every breath was torture. The burning worsened as it moved upward through his throat. It felt like he had swallowed a burning piece of coal and he was now vomiting it out. The burning was too much to bear and Milas opened his mouth and puked.

Asher dodged the muck that came from Milas' mouth and watched him puke from the corner of the room. The disgusting fountain ended and Milas felt drained but relieved at the same time. The pain was fading away but he was starting to feel a new one from his hand. Milas stared in horror at the bent and mangled fingers on his hand. His body was healing faster than normal but it didn't change the fact that Asher broke his fingers. He stared at Asher with murder in his eyes.

"Don't give me that look, you were breaking my wrist and I didn't have a choice." Asher didn't care what Milas thought about what he did. He had been taught to pay someone back in kind, friend or foe.

"I'm gonna kick your butt once I heal. Which reminds me, I'm not complaining but how am I alive? I specifically remember dying." Milas had so many questions but he asked the important one first.

"I can't answer that but I will call someone who can, don't worry about anything." Asher left the room before Milas could say anything else. Milas could not understand Asher's character, he was shy in general but was straightforward with his actions. His thoughts were interrupted by a faint sizzling sound. He traced it back to the floor, more specifically the puke on the floor. He stared at the mess so intently that he didn't notice Asher enter the room in the company of two adults.

"I see the poison is finally out of your body." The familiar voice caught Milas' attention and he looked up to see the principal. Milas didn't know what to say but the principal spoke first."You probably have a lot of questions and I also have questions of my own. I'll wait until you recover before we talk. I will see you then Milas."

The principal finished his one sided conversation and left. Milas looked at the other adult vampire and immediately cursed under his breath. It was the same woman he had insulted on the first day of school. She also seemed to remember him and the dangerous looks they gave each other were obvious to Asher. He was never one to retain his thoughts so he spoke up.

"Do you hate each other or something?" Asher's question earned him a strange look from the woman but she still answered him.

"I don't hate the boy but it pleases me to see him in such a miserable state." The woman didn't lie as there was no need to do so. Asher knew that the woman wasn't a threat to Milas as she had been partially taking care of him when he was unconscious.

"Since we're good, can I know how many hours I've been asleep for?" Milas was looking at Asher when he asked the question. He didn't ask the woman because he didn't know how she felt and couldn't trust her.

"How many hours are there in four days?" Milas couldn't believe that he was unconscious for that long. Asher had no reason to lie to him so it had to be true. Milas was about to talk when the door opened.

"Hey Asher, it's my turn to look af... You're awake!" Milas looked at the person but all he saw was the black academy uniform before something slammed into him. He felt suffocated as Step tightly hugged his neck.

"Don't you ever scare me like that. I thought that you were dead." Step was getting teary but she held back the tears and released Milas who gasped for breath.

"Since you're alive it means that my work here is done. Just drink some blood and your energy should return since you puked out the poison. I'll let you talk with your friends." The woman immediately left the room and Milas was now alone with the two 'friends'.

"Can you tell me what happened? I don't remember anything." Milas asked Step since Asher refused to answer him before.

"The librarian found you unconscious with multiple wounds on your body. There were two third year students laying unconscious near you. It was actually one unconscious and one dead. You were holding the guys decapitated head so hard that your fingers were stuck in the skull. You will have to answer to the principal about the reason for killing him." Step wanted to be helpful to Milas so she answered as well as she could. Milas wanted to ask for more details but he suddenly heard another voice speak.

"I had to kill the Moroi subclass since he had poisoned you." The voice was deep and seemed to echo around the room. Milas looked around the room but saw no one except for Asher and Step. "It's me, your guardian devil. Before you ask, you are the only one who can hear me. I need to talk to you urgently so you need to ask everyone to leave."

Milas didn't want to trust the voice in his head but it had caught his interest when it said that it had killed someone.

"Can you guys give me some time alone to think?" Asher and Step didn't mind since they knew that Milas was probably very confused and needed to think. The door was shut and Milas was wondering how to get the attention of the guardian devil.

"Now that they're gone, we need to talk about your life choices. You are getting into trouble too often and I can't always save you." The voice spoke and seemed to be echoing throughout Milas' surroundings.

"First of all, who and where are you? Second, what did you mean by killing the Moroi subclass? Third, what the heck is a Moroi subclass?" Milas wanted to get the important stuff out of the way before anything else.

"First, I'm the phoenix and I'm inside your body. Second, I took over your body when you passed out and saved your sorry ass. Third, Moroi is the name of a vampire subclass and their main trait is glowing green eyes and poisonous blood. The kid poisoned you and the fastest way to remove the poison was to kill him. A Moroi's poison becomes ineffective when they die." After the voice said that, things started to make more sense to Milas.

"So you're the thing that takes over when I'm passing out and kills people." Milas now had new questions but the answer that followed didn't help.

"It's not me. I don't know what it is but it seems to be useful so I don't think that it matters much. I want to remind you to find mana crystals since even talking to you is draining." The phoenix, Vandelorian said as his voice started to sound a little distant.

"You got me in trouble by killing that kid you need to help me. I don't think it will be easy to explain a phoenix living inside me so at least give me a believable excuse." Milas wanted to ask more questions but he knew that Van couldn't talk to him for long.

"They will probably get someone powerful to use the charm skill so that you don't lie. The only way is to feed them a half truth that they will believe. If they ask you what happened you tell them that you lost control. Tell them that you were bleeding heavily and something else took over your body when you were losing consciousness." Van said as his voice became even more faint towards the end.

"Won't they ask me what took over?" Milas knew that the excuse was basically a vague description of what happened but he had to point out the flaw.

"Believe me, they won't ask anything more if you say that to th..." Van's voice completely disappeared and Milas was alone in his room.

"Wait, who changed my clothes?" Milas hadn't noticed it before but he was dressed in what he assumed to be a gown for the grievously injured. "I can't believe some random person saw me naked."
