A Soldier's Tale

"Ebuka!" "Ebuka!" "Ebuka!" "How many times have I called you?", his mother asked as she wagged her finger in his face. "3 times mama", he replied, his face still rigid. She almost had tears in her eyes as her voice turned shaky..."Are you really sure you want to do this?", she asked with red eyes. Ebuka's face softened then, as he gently took her hands in his while recalling that fateful day. "I'm sure mama... I want to become a soldier!"

Could have... dut didn't

Ebuka stumbled as he attempted to rise from his knees, he met with failure. He tried until he had successfully managed to do so... albeit shakily.

He shuffled forward, every inch bringing him to the very front of the battlefield, where most of the action happened.

He smiled at himself, the self-depreciating kind of smile, the kind that was never really a smile. With his soulless eyes he looked eerie.

A scene replayed in his head constantly, seemingly in an endless loop.He stopped abruptly as he recalled the memory in detail. It was the very scene of when he had bravely told his mother,"I want to be a soldier!"

The scene would have been heart-warming in any other situation, but right now... his very words sounded harsh to his own ears. He laughed. It sounded more like a growl. His words had come back to bite him.

The memory of him professing his wish to chase his career, his eyes glazed with passion and determination! Now those same eyes looked dead.

At last, the endless loop seemed to have been broken finally. Drowned out by a more dreadful one.

It was the scene of David's last moments. He wanted to give himself logical excuses, wanted to give himself reasons. he wanted to give himself an easy way out. But the truth reared its ugly head right in his face.

He could have saved him... but he didn't.
