Chapter 42

The screams of the people coming from inside the house made me jump in my skin. I look to Adrian and Arden, and the grave look that they give me makes me know that it can be nothing good.

We begin to move inside once more, with trepidation finding its way into my belly and a gut-wrenching fear settling itself in my heart. It hasn't even been a day that the winter games have been announced, and yet there seems to be a raucous already. We all make our way back in calmly, and I look to Adrian and Arden to see them pointedly staring away from each other, it seems this sort of situation dosen't call for verbal exchange, as we all walk like we are going to someone's funeral.

I'm guessing that's what it will possibly be. The place is huge so it takes us some time, but right there in the middle of the hall where we had just gathered a few hours ago, lies a body. A body of a young girl who looks almost my age.

Her face is blanched due to lack of blood flowing through her anymore, and I feel I can see the life slipping away from her.

It hasn't been half an hour yet that I had seen a girl very similar to her, she had looked unsure of what she was doing here and that confident gaze that everyone seemed to have around here looked lost on her.

She wanted to show aggression, but she didn't have the heart to and as I look at the blood that is unusually dark flowing down the side of her chin, I can't help but feel scared.

I see her dress is similar to mine, as it is possibly what is ideal in this sort of weather. Everyone just stands around, looking, waiting, for something that I don't think is going to happen.

Are they expecting her to jump back to life and laugh all this off like it was some sort of joke?. I softly glance around the room, and catch the eyes of a hundred people with an unfeeling tincture In thier gaze.

It seems no one is surprised by this occurrence, of someone being randomly killed. As Arden had explained earlier, the winter games had  begun, and just one mistake could end you in your grave.

I still can't handle the way her face bugs me though, she looks so young, with a whole life ahead of her, and yet due to the cruelty and greediness of someone alive, her's has been cut short.

She's lying on the floor, probably poisoned from this morning, or was it last night?. Her heart had stopped beating, the life fleeing away from her.

Everyone regards this scene with a sort of coldness that I can't fathom human beings would be able to express, it doesn't seem like anything is wrong from where they are standing, and so I pull a blank face too. It's not right to show weakness in front of your enemies.
