32 Not-so-good-enough Boyfriend

After all was said and done, Mrs. Carter picked up her purse. "I hope you have a good evening," she said to them before pushing her chair with the back of her legs and turning to leave.

As soon as her back was turned to them, Mrs. Young turned to look at the other couple, Mrs. Holland in particular and spat, "Tell your gold-digger son to stay far away from my daughter. He doesn't deserve her."

Hearing that painful order, Mr. Holland and Mrs. Holland were left in shock. The latter let out a gasp as she watched the Young couple walk away without giving them another glance.

"I can't believe that our son will bring us this level of embarrassment in one day," Mr. Holland said with disappointment laced in his tone.

His wife who was sitting next to him sighed, "I warned him when he was getting together with Mrs. Carter's daughter. He loved her achievement hence the reason he got together with her."

"But after she lost everything including her sight in that accident, his love changed," Mr. Holland finished. "It seems like his feelings were so fickle."

"Exactly," Mrs. Holland confirmed as she released another sigh. "Since Sam got together with Anna for a reason, it shouldn't be a surprise for his heart to change when those reasons are gone."

Mr. Holland shook his head and asked while gesturing with his hands, "Who raised Sam again?"

"Both of us," Mrs. Holland answered without a smile on her face. "Let's go home. We have to talk to Sam."

---

In the car, Mrs. Young couldn't stop lashing out, especially about Sam and their daughter.

"I can't believe Susan. She wanted to mess around and couldn't find someone better to do it with?!"

Sitting next to her in the back seat, her husband turned to her with a side glance, "Can you keep it down?"

"Oh, please don't silence me." Mrs. Young rolled her eyes and turned her head towards another direction. "I have to be angry that our daughter has a poor taste in men. I mean, her best friend sure did, but how could she follow in her steps?"

Her husband scoffed. "Should that be your concern or should this news getting out there be your worry?"

"Both!" Mrs. Young groaned. "Susan needs to clear her mind about this stupid play she has going on. Cheating on her best friend with her not-so-good-enough boyfriend?" She twitched her lips. "I rasied her well, she can do better."

---

On the other hand, after Mrs. Carter left the restaurant in a cab, she fished for her phone and sent a text to Anna just in case she hadn't concluded her meeting with those fake friends of hers.

'I just left my meeting with the Youngs and Hollands. Are you done, yet?'

Anna was sitting on her ride back to Roy's place when her phone vibrated. She quickly took a look at the screen to see the message from her mother. And as soon as she finished reading it, she unlocked her phone and put a call through to her.

"Hey, Mum," she greeted as soon as the call connected.

"Hello, Dear. It seems like you are done with your meeting?" Her mother probed.

"Yeah… I'm on my way home… I-I mean to Roy's place," Anna quickly corrected just in case her mother would misunderstand and think she was returning to her home.

Mrs. Carter shook her head. "It's fine, I get it. How was the meet-up? Did you take a cab?"

"Roy dedicated a chauffeur to me and yes, the meet-up did go not so great because those two actually flaunted their romance in front of me not knowing I could see everything."

"The nerves!" Mrs. Carter breathed. "Hope you taught them a few lessons like downing a bowl of soup down their heads or throwing a glass of water at them?"

A soft chuckle escaped from Anna's lips. She didn't know why she found her mother's question to be funny in that serious situation.

"Mum, I'm too classy to act like a shrew, but I sure did give them a shocker," Anna revealed and then went on to talk about Sam and Susan's reactions after she took off her sun shades to show them her restored sight, and to prove that she had seen everything they right in front of her.

"Good girl," Mrs. Carter breathed. "At least they will have something to haunt them for several days in a row."

Anna couldn't believe her ears even though she was in the least bit surprised. She had always known that her mother had a good sense of humour, but she didn't know when it got better.

She felt like laughing along to it, and so she did.

"How is it going between you and Roy?" Not waiting for her response because she didn't exactly ask that question to get a response, Mrs. Carter continued, "Hope you remember what I said? You can't get pregnant, not now."

"Mum!" Anna breathed as her gaze immediately hit the rearview mirror to see if the driver was paying any attention to her or the conversation over the phone, except his eyes were glued to the road.

"What?" Mrs. Carter spread her hand out. "Anna, your dear mother is serious about this. I am not trying to stop you from having fun with your husband, but please remember, no babies if you really want your career back and kicking within a year at most."

Anna groaned and was on the verge of face-palming her forehead. She didn't know how long her mother was going to keep bugging her with that topic, and she didn't want it to continue, so she thought about putting an end to everything by spilling a fact.

"Mum, Roy and I have not gotten to that stage yet. We are just getting to know each other well enough to build such deep intimacy."

"Yeah," Mrs. Carter nodded as she played with the tip of her fingers. "Exactly what happened between me and your father before you came along the next month."
