A Brilliant Mother-in-law

"What major misunderstanding happened that you two can't get over?" Mrs. Carter asked, looking serious.

A deep sigh escaped Anna's lips. She played with her fingers before slowly meeting her mother's gaze with a gloomy look that revealed that she hadn't gotten over it.

"They got together behind my back," she managed to say in a shallow tone that could pass as a whisper.

"What?" Mrs. Carter leaned out of the couch looking a little lost. She thought she did not hear clearly, but when her daughter failed to repeat her words, she leaned back on the couch.

This revelation was enough to cripple anyone who was morally right.

"I-I don't understand. It's fine that Sam was tempted because he is human, but to actually fall for the temptation and that too with your best friend? What sort of madness and inhumane act is that?"

Mrs. Carter just couldn't believe it and she was starting to be worried about what friendship was turning into these days.

Was that how the world was supposed to be now? That relationship would become so inconsistent that anything can ruin it and break it apart.

While the mother and daughter continued to display different emotions to that news, Roy came to understand another side of the former.

He could tell that the woman was very angry, but her reaction was different when compared to how she reacted to his marriage with her daughter.

'Was it because the two shocking incidents were different, hence the reason her reactions were not the same?' he wondered.

"Anna, how did you find out about this?" Mrs. Cater inquired. She didn't think her daughter found out about it after she returned home otherwise, her mood wouldn't have been so good. And also, she wouldn't have married Roy that fast.

Anna relaxed a bit before reencountering the incident from the past. "Mum, you remember that day we went to Susan's place from the hospital because I wanted to announce the good news to her?"

"Mmmmm..." Mrs. Carter nodded. "I remember that you didn't look so good when you came out. What happened back there?"

"I think Sam slept over. When I got to Susan's bedroom, I perceived his cologne there and also, he seemed to have left his phone even though Susan claimed that she changed her ringtone. This was when my suspicion started." Having said up to this point, Anna took a breath before she continued.

She went on to tell her mother about the chats she read after she regained her sight without forgetting to talk about how her so-called best friend almost made her lose hope in her sight.

As Anna was speaking, she opened the group chat and scrolled down to the messages from before and passed the phone to her mother to take a look.

"It looks like they have been together for a while," Mrs. Carter mumbled with furrowed brows as she continued to observe.

Finally, when she was done, she handed the phone back to Anna. "Mum is really sorry that you have to go through this kind of betrayal, but we can see that there are less genuine people in this world and that people can change their attitude towards us at any time. You just have to keep a strong spirit so you can get over situations like this."

Mrs. Carter spoke a bit more to Anna before asking her to go back to her seat. "Don't worry, I will take care of this situation for you."

"No," Anna shook her head with determination. "I want to take care of this myself."

"How do you want to go about it?" her mother inquired, looking very interested.

Anna went on to divulge her strategy, but in the end, her mother was not too impressed. "That's a good plan to give them a shock, but it's not enough. Tell me when you're them and I will set up a meeting with their parents and hand over the pieces of evidence to them."

"You're going to bring their parents into this?" Anna raised a questioning brow. She hadn't even thought that far. Her mother was really something else.

"I have to so that when they learn that you are with another person, they will understand more," Mrs. Carter explained as her gaze fell on Roy who had been long forgotten.

"Also, thanks for finally telling me how long you two have known each other before getting married." Mrs. Carter shifted her gaze between the young man and woman and added, "It really has only been for a while."

"What?" Anna looked very confused as she stole a glance at Roy who seemed to have a small smile sitting at the corner of his lips. "H-How..."

Understanding the question she wanted to ask, Roy leaned in to whisper to her ear, "Tell me who you inherited your IQ from?"

Anna immediately knew that he was taunting her and moved away with a frown on her face.

'At least it looks like they get on fine.' Her mother observed.

"Roy, tell me, who are you?" Mrs. Carter asked, quickly changing the topic.

She only knew his full name from the marriage certificate and he was yet to do a proper introduction of himself.

"Forgive me, Mrs. Carter for my rudeness. I am, Roy Kim, Minister Kim's eldest son."

"The Minister of Works?" Mrs. Carter raised a brow and when Roy acknowledged her guess, her expression changed. What was the son of one of their country's ministers doing in her house?

After learning about what Roy does for a living, she threw the question she has been interested in for a while. "Does your father know about this marriage?"

Roy smiled, "Yes, he is very much aware."

"He must be very mad then," Mrs. Carter said.

Being able to have a conversation with his wife's mother had become a notable experience for Roy who was fascinated by her intelligence.

Roy came to understand that Mrs. Carter was not someone gullible and that she did not make his life difficult even though her warnings which concerned her daughter were straight, was his luck.

"Although I don't see this marriage lasting for one reason or the other, since you two have already signed up for it, deal with it as you see fit."

Then to her daughter, she said in a clear tone, "Make sure your marriage lasts longer than mine did."

In Anna's mind, she could already see her mother going through hell to teach both her and Roy a big lesson for divorcing only three months after marriage.

Anna let out a deep sigh in advance.

While chatting, Mrs. Carter led Roy to the dining table to eat dinner and continued listening to him talk about his family and business. She wanted to use that opportunity to find out his personality.

Since Roy had already made it clear that he was taking Anna back to his place to show her around, Mrs. Carter had no qualms.

"I would also like to see where you two will be living, but not today," she said.

"I will make sure to invite you soon, Mrs. Carter," Roy smiled.

Mrs. Carter remembered that Anna did not pack her things, so she used that as an excuse to drag her into her bedroom, leaving Roy alone. As it was, there were a few things she needed to teach her.

"I will set up an appointment with your manager next week. Be home by then."
