1 Chapter 1

"Shawn! Time for school! It's your first day!" Mom called from downstairs. Great. I'm going to be the only human going to an all animal school. This was the closest and cheapest school we could find and, surprisingly, I was accepted.

"SHAWN!"

"I'M COMING!" I shout down the stairs. I get dressed and fix my purple streaked hair. Then I go downstairs.

"Took ya long enough." Mom said.

"Where's Karla and Dad?" I ask.

"Your dad went to work and dropped your sister off at school. Do you want me to drive you to school?"

"No, I'll be fine. I can walk."

"You sure?"

"Yes! Oh my God!"

"Alright, then. Have a good day at school!" Mom said as I walked out of the house.

It was a lonely walk. Mainly because I had to move away from all my old friends. I used to ride the bus with my good friend Jayce. And when I got to school, I would hang out with my best friends Chris, Karlee, Victoria, John, and Liam.

Then I had to move away.

I got to the school just ten minutes before the day started. I decided to go find the principal's office so I can get my schedule. Only, I couldn't find the principal's office. I looked everywhere but couldn't seem to find it. I decided to go back to the entrance of the school and start from there. I rounded the corner and smacked right into a girl about my age. I tried to get a better look at her but my glasses ended up coming off. We both fell to the ground.

"Oh my god! Are you alright?" She said.

"Yeah. I'm fine." I say.

"I am so sorry! I should've looked where I was going!"

"Hey, don't sweat it. I'm okay. I just need my glasses."

"Here let me help. Hold out your hand." I did and felt the shape of my glasses rest on my palm. I put my glasses on and take a look at the girl who helped me. She looked about my age and she had green horns on her head. Along with matching wings and a tail. She was a dragon.

I guess I must have stared for too long because she asked, "What are you looking at?"

"Sorry. It's just… I've never seen a dragon before. But I've always wanted to."

"Oh! You like dragons?"

I nod my head.

"Sorry about that, by the way. I'm Shawn."

"I'm Jewel. Me and my boyfriend are the only dragons in this school."

"And I'm the only human here."

We went silent for a moment. Then I remembered what I was doing here in the first place.

"Crap! I need to get to the principal's office for my schedule!" I say. "Would you mind showing me around the school?"

"Actually, I have a better idea!" Jewel said. "I'll take you to my boyfriend and he can show you! He knows this place by the back of his talon."

"Alright. Let's go."

* * *

Jewel led me to what looks like the school's courtyard. Jewel looks around until she sees someone, then grabs my arm and ducks down into a bush.

"What the h−" I was cut off by Jewel covering my mouth.

"Shh! Or else she'll see you!" She said.

"Who?" Jewel pointed and I could make out another girl who looked like a wolf. "Who is she?"

"That's Jessica. Everyday she tries to flirt with my boyfriend and she's also the school's biggest bully. If I were you, I would stay as far away from her as possible."

"Ahem." We hear a voice behind us. We turn around and I see another dragon. His wings, tail, and horns are all black.

"Hi, babe!" Jewel said.

"Hey, Jewel. Who's this?"

"This is Shawn. He's a human."

"A human, huh? Neat." He sticks out a hand. "Name's Raxus. But you can call me Rax."

I look at his hand for a moment before taking it. His grip is firm.

"Hey, I have an idea. Why don't we all eat lunch together?" Jewel said.

"I wouldn't mind." I said. "It has been a while since I ate lunch with friends."

"You don't have any friends?" Rax said.

"Not anymore, since I moved away." I say.

"Sorry to hear that." Jewel said. "Hey, maybe we can be friends."

"Sure. Why not?"

"Oh! That reminds me. Babe, Shawn needs a tour of the school. Would you mind?"

"Not at all." Rax said.

About twenty minutes later, we ended the tour at the rooftop.

"And that's the end of the tour. I'll take you to the principal's office to get your schedule. Follow me."

We walk back down the stairs and towards the principal's office. Everything was going just fine until−

"Hey, handsome." A girl's voice said.

"God dammit." I heard Rax mumble under his breath. We turned around and saw that one girl− Jessica− standing at the other end of the hall.

"I've noticed you've been hanging around that other girl a lot more recently. Maybe you should break up. You deserve someone better than her."

"For the last time Jessica! Leave me alone!" Rax was furious now. I could sense heat coming from his wings. I had to do something.

"Jessica, please. Just listen to him." I say. She turns to me with a sour expression.

"Who the hell are you?" She said.

"Just a friend."

"Well, not listening to you at all." She starts to advance on Rax. I couldn't think of anything else to do so I pushed her away from him.

"What the hell?!" She screamed.

"Leave him alone!" I yell.

"Shawn, please. Don't get involved. This is my problem, not yours."

"If it means I'm sticking up for a friend, then I have to get involved."

"Look, I don't know who the hell you think you are. But I don't care. One day, Raxy will be mine." Jessica said and walked away.

"You didn't have to do that. Now she has you on her hate list."

"I know. But I would have felt bad if I didn't stick up for you." I say.

Rax smiled. "Alright, man. Let's go get your schedule."

* * *

After about two class periods (Me and Rax skipped 1st and 2nd because of the tour) It was time to head to lunch. It wasn't hard to find Jewel and Rax. After we got our lunch, we sat down on the bench and chatted for a little while. Then the bell rang and we went to our class. Turns out for 6th period we are all in the same class for science. The teacher assigned us a group project and let us choose our partners. Obviously, I paired up with Jewel and Rax.

"Tell ya what," Rax said, "I'll take us all to my house for the project."

"Alright. Sounds good to me." Jewel said. I agreed to meet them right outside the school afterwards.

After school ended, I went to my locker to put all my stuff away when suddenly−

"Oof!" I grunted as I was knocked to the ground. I look over my shoulder to see Jessica standing over me.

"Hey there, tough guy." Jessica said.

"What the hell do you want?"

"Payback." She said as she reared her foot back. Everything seemed to go into slow motion. The next few moments were kind of a blur. I remembered feeling a sharp pain in my stomach and the blood that dripped down my face. Then I passed out.
