10 Chapter 10: Checkpoint

Activating the windshield wipers, a jet of water cleaned the blood that was stuck on the driver's glass. It had been a few minutes since they had left the hell that was the bridge out of the city.

Although Liushi didn't feel like a coward, he found it a bit strange that his heart had only slightly accelerated, given it was a tense situation. Normal people would easily panic; he attributed this change in his spirit to the mutations he underwent during the outbreak.

Not only could he feel and control any electronic within the AMF, whether it was his exoskeleton or the onboard computers, but his brain also seemed much faster than usual, as if he had received an upgrade.

[Performing diagnostics on the AMF]

[The structure of the AMF shows no damage]

[Wheels and glass unharmed]

[Gasoline levels: 80%]

During this time, the girls finally calmed down, seeing the landscape change and the sound of impacts decrease. Only some remnants of zombies and the blood, dirtying the windows, remained.

"We survived," Lili spoke. "And the windows are intact!" The two girls exclaimed loudly. The windshield, in fact, had not broken, and the doors were still well sealed.

Indeed, even with the various impacts, the windows hadn't even cracked.

Wen Xiaotian carefully stood up and looked through the blood-stained window. Some zombies were still chasing them, but they were meters away. Some zombies could be seen feeding on bodies by the roadside.

Others ran after the microbus, but they were left behind. Even so, these zombies did not seem slow at all; they definitely seemed much faster than the zombies portrayed in most movies.

Wen Xiaotian just looked and didn't want to keep watching. She wanted to be sure that they had escaped the encirclement. It was unexpected that the microbus was so strong and durable, even the windows were so firm.

After a while, Wen Xiaotian looked at the blood-stained windshield and curiously asked: "Mr. Jiang, how can this window be so strong?"

"Uh... I'm kind of a mechanic; I have a hobby of modifying cars. So I made some modifications to the microbus and installed bulletproof glass," Liushi lied without hesitation. After all, there was no way he could reveal the existence of the Starseed.

"Bulletproof glass!" Lili was surprised because she believed that this could only be seen in movies! A bulletproof car in everyday life was not at all common. Lili had some knowledge about vehicles. She knew that, although some high-end brands offered bulletproof cars, they had to be customized at a very high price.

And why would bulletproof windows be installed on such an old microbus? Lili felt it was hard to understand, so she looked at Wen Xiaotian. But Xiaotian shook her head indicating that she was not familiar with Jiang Liushi. Even if Lili wanted her to explain, what she knew was not much more than Lili.

"All right. You should find a place to sit down and fasten your seatbelt," said Jiang Liushi.

"Yes, sir." The two girls quickly obeyed.

"You don't need to call me that. Just Jiang or Liushi is fine." He laughed seeing the stiffness of the girls.

Lili didn't want to see any zombies, so she went to the living room and sat on the couch. The soft couch made her feel very comfortable. She touched the surface of the couch and thought it must be expensive because of the cashmere fabric.

The carpet made people feel relaxed; it was like stepping on cotton. The curtains were closed, so she couldn't see the outside situation. She felt safe. They had gone through a hellish situation, nearly dying several times.

Sitting in the microbus, Lili felt like everything seemed like a dream.

She looked around for a moment and was stunned by the luxurious internal facilities of the microbus. She wasn't sure how much this must have cost. Moreover, there was the driver's cabin, with several monitors showing various information, almost like the room of an airplane pilot.

She picked up the mineral water, intending to drink a little, but she put it back in its original place. This wasn't her car. She felt embarrassed about drinking water without permission. Like Wen Xiaotian, Shao Lili was also a university student; they were good friends. When the disaster happened, they were together and fled together.

Fortunately, they found Jiang Liushi, or else they would have been in the mouths of some zombie by now. Wen Xiaotian hesitated for a moment and then entered the driver's cabin and sat in the right seat. Once she sat in that seat, she felt extremely comfortable; it was like soft cotton.

This surprised Wen Xiaotian once again. But the situation ahead was not comfortable at all. Looking out of the microbus

, a car that had been stopped by zombies could be seen. The unlucky driver was being dragged out of the window by several zombies, waving his hands madly, screaming, and then drowned in the sea of zombies.

This scene left Wen Xiaotian pale. Jiang Liushi did not stop and continued forward. Some zombies looked at the microbus and tried to reach it, but they could not.

Meanwhile, the entrance to the highway could finally be seen. The original toll plaza had been completely transformed into a military checkpoint. Military trucks blocked the front, exposing only three lanes, and trucks covered with machine guns, pointing at the approaching cars. Heavily armed soldiers held guns in front of the entrance.

Seeing this, Liushi slowed down the microbus and approached the army checkpoint.
