1 Mundane week

Ericka kept her head down and did her job. Another boring week at work delivering room service. The heat was getting to her at she didn't know if she could take any more traipsing up and down the dark hallways to archaic rooms filled with ancient people smelling of hospital and BenGay. As she ran down the stairs back to the little hole in the wall where they filled the room service orders, she saw her coworker riding on the shiny new golf cart the resort just gave to them for catering runs. Maybe she'd be allowed to help him set up the party, maybe she'd get a glimpse of an exciting guest as they set up, maybe she'd get out of this dead end job and actually have a real career. One could only hope.

Ericka just moved from up north where November was filled with cool breezes and light flakes sticking to your lashes as moms and grandmas made cookies and hot chocolate for their families to devour. How she missed the cold weather, crunchy leaves and holiday parties from back home. It was 6pm and already dark, but there was no respite from the heat. Her shirt was sticking to her like a piece of cling wrap covering soup. The air was hot and sticky even in the winter months in Florida. Tomorrow she had an interview for a real job. Soon it would be her birthday 28, another year wasted. When would she ever be out of this rut? She moved to Florida to get away from a ministry job that didn't work out. A crazy church, a downtrodden community split in two, kids that didn't want to learn, as she thought about it she guessed staying with her mom was better than that. She missed her friends, her friends that had become family, most of all Ohio.

The next day, the interview went well. The older gentleman that interviewed her was kind but firm. They talked about teaching and kids and it didn't seem like an interview at all. Ericka toured the camp and met a bunch of kids. The camp was a very unique place, it gave off the air of forest, integrity and home. All of the kids she talked to were very genuine and really seemed to be getting something out of the program. She loved the coolness of the woods and how the place seemed to embrace her with a calmness she hadn't felt in Florida before. The gentleman was the education director and promptly offered her the job after she had dinner in the dining hall with the kids. She accepted. She was on cloud nine the rest of the ride home! This was it THIS is what she was waiting for!!!
