Chapter 119: The Northern Jaegers

One month later

Erebonian Empire Northern Border.

Dusk.

As the midnight gleam streaked across the sky, most of it was shrouded away in murky clouds. It did not look like it was going to rain, and yet, at the same time, rain appeared as if it could fall any moment.

"Fire!", A voice commanded.

Immediately after, a lone shot suddenly burst through what appeared a very rocky terrain, littered with boulders and stone crags. The still darkness of the night was interrupted by a large bullet of sorts. Once it was shot, it hissed. It didn't take long before the bullet ignited, turning into a flare that streaked across the sky, shooting straight upward. This flare came from an orbal gun that could shoot these special types of bullets.

After firing the flare, it illuminated several figures squeezed into the rocks below with dreary eyes yet also containing excitement. These people appeared to be dressed clad in armor and helmets, hiding away most of their faces. They were not soldiers.

No. Far from it. These people were mercenaries. Guns for hire as they'd say. Jaegers.

Several figures clad in purple could be seen facing off what appeared to be surrounding them with figures clad in black and figures clad in red. The figures clad in purple were currently being pinned down. With the rough terrain around them, it was enough to say they were boxed in.

"Damn it! We're surrounded!", One of the Jaegers clad in purple yelled out seeing more Jaegers approach them.

"This is like, totally not going as planned.", A second voice said, seemingly belonging to that of a female. Inside one of the areas, this figure placed their backs against the first figure, who just shot the orbal flare gun, which was still illuminating the dusky sky above. "What do we do, Captain?", The girl Jaeger asked, only to fire off several more rounds.

"What can we do? Hell if I'd had know that those damn snakes and reds actually managed to reach an agreement on something. Is our capital really such a prize to them?", The first Jaeger clad in purple said with a groan. This Jaeger seemed quite tall. On top of the rifle he was using, he also wore gauntlets over his arms, as he specialized in close combat.

"Haha, being backed into a corner is your typical work of being a Jaeger, ain't it? Still, I gotta agree with ya Captain. It ain't looking good. It'll be only be a matter of time until they breach the border and storm into Haliask.", A third Jaeger said nearby, belonging to that of a man. He also continued to fire his orbal rifle.

Accompanying these three figures were a few other Jaegers clad in purple. Some holding orbal rifles while others held two handed swords.

"We just gotta hold out. I already shot the thing.", The Captain said. After saying that, he rushed out toward a couple Jaegers clad in black and red. Without warning he struck out with his fists, only to cause a loud bang to strike in the ongoing firing from stray bullets, dodging each one. Each strike he made with his gauntlets caused a dent to appear in their armor, quickly followed by blood spraying from their mouths. Each Jaeger quickly fell unconscious after being blasted into a nearby boulder.

"Well, I don't plan on dying today. I still have my youth to enjoy unlike you guys.", The girl Jaeger said, only to fell another Jaeger clad in black.

"These bastards are relentless though...", The Captain uttered.

However, at this time, their group suddenly heard several howls coming from a large distance away. The moment this group heard these howls, everyone frowned.

"Shit. They even brought in their mutts. How long is Zephyr gonna make us wait!?", The Captain retorted.

"Hey! Are you guys alright!?", A fourth voice suddenly called out to them. This voice also belonged to a girl's. After this girl said that, from the opposite direction, their group suddenly saw streaks of purple lightning boom across the ground, likely beloning to the user's battle aura. The moment they saw this purple lightning shoot at a couple more Jaegers coming in quickly, they let out a sigh of relief.

"Is that you, Sara?", The girl Jaeger asked, as she saw a pretty deep cerise red haired figure arrive. What put her apart from others beside the fact that she wasn't wearing a Jaeger's helmet, was that she held a customized orbal pistol in one hand while holding a sword in the other. She was a dual wielder, excelling in both close and far ranged combat. She appeared ninteen years old.

"I've brought backup. Papa's squad is also inbound and heading our way.", The girl named Sara responded, quickly arriving at the Jaegers clad in purple.

At this time, when they regrouped, they suddenly heard a fifth voice coming from the direction that Sara came from.

"More targets incoming. 2'clock.", The fifth voice said, belonging to that of a younger voice.

"Already on it. I see some out in the distance too. War dogs accompanying them.", A sixth voice said, belonging to that of a young girl.

The Jaegers clad in purple saw two fast figures rush past them, ignoring Sara and the others. However, seeing the two focused on the battle, a smile crept on Sara's face. And yet, the Captain blinked at seeing those two.

"...Was that guy just holding a rapier just now?", The Captain asked. At the same time, he saw the young boy strike out, piercing a red Jaeger's armor through the chest as if it was melted butter. The girl suddenly shot out from her two guns as well. They were also customized, each holding a blade to it, felling a Jaeger clad in black.

"Who rhe hell did you pick up this time, Sara?" The second guy asked.

"Phoenix and Sylphid. Two recently promoted Captains in Zephyr. Don't let their young age fool you. Their strength is already comparable to mine.", Sara said.

"No shit. They just took care of a couple Jaegers as if they were slicing through a piece of cake!", The girl Jaeger retorted.

At this time, they suddenly got blasted by s barrage of bullets coming from one of the higher stone crags further into the distance. Several Jaegers currently stood on it.

"Damn. They got the high ground now. I don't think our rifles can reach em.", The Captain said, only to block several bullets with his gauntlets.

"Already taken care of.", The young boy said, only to drop the Jaeger he just pierced with his rapier dead onto the cold rock beneath him. Blood sprayed out as he did. Hearing that drew their attention, only to see the boy continue to talk as if he was speaking to another.

"Do it, Emma.", The boy said.

"Understood.", a female voice said, causing everyone to blink, even though they couldn't find anyone.

Further beyond in the direction where they came from, another large stone crag stood in the distance. Two sole figures could be seen standing on it.

Well to be more specific, one was currently laying down on their stomach, clad in a dark green armor set. She seemed to be quite young, similar to how Phoenix and Sylphid looked.

Next to her was a person who didn't seem to be a Jaeger at all, despite currently wearing the armor of one to fit in. An orbal pistol held at their waist, sporting icy blue hair.

"Tell me again how in Aidios's name did you acquire such a weapon like this? Are you sure you can hit those guys? I can barely even see them from here.", The icy blue haired girl asked, still doubting.

"Grandmother made it, but the idea and blueprint was given by Naoto. I'd love to talk about it, but I need full concentration here. One misstep and my mana could go haywire. You don't want to be caught in such an explosion. Trust me.", The girl said, only to focus her eyes on the scope of what appeared to be a giant orbal sniper rifle, currently perched on top of the stone with her.

At the sane time, a blueish sura wrapped around the sniper rifle, coating it in the girl's mana.

"Right...I'll make sure your crossfire remains checked.", The icy blue haired girl said, ready to fire at a moment's notice.

Hearing that, the other girl smiled. Taking in a deep breath and keeping her mana steady, she held her eye in the scope she was using. Finding several Jaegers on top of another stone crag in the distance who were firing at Jaegers clad in purple, she readied her shot.

In the next moment, a very loud bang suddenly streaked across the battlefield, causing everyone to become momentarily stunned, as the shot just fired sounded as if it came straight out of an artillery cannon...
