Planning My Escape

"It's supper time!" my mother said, her voice sounding like a speaker even though she didn't have to scream. I suppose it was a feature in us provided by humans to keep predators at bay.

Taron gave me a thumbs up before hurrying down to the maids' quarters, where they ate at the same time we did. I quickly completed packing everything I needed for my four to five day trip, depending on security.

I knew it would take entire days and nights in each colony to get to the outside gates, but getting past the black colony guards was the most difficult aspect.

They were stronger than any of us, and this made me dread them in a way I had never feared a colony before. I observed how they would apprehend runaways and brutally beat them. They were authorized to do so in order to prevent the conflict from resuming.

The conflict that caused us to run away and hide on this island.

I have to confess that Zagoroth is a secure place, but we aren't permitted to travel about anywhere other than the kingdom at night, and if found, any fae no matter what the color was to be placed in the black colony to be brutally tortured and given a lesson never to do so again. The regulations were so severe in Zagoroth that, while the adults thought it was a secure place, we thought it was like a jail.

People believe living in the castle is fantastic, but it's actually like living in a prison within a prison.

.............

"Good night, Kara," mother said to our maid, implying that they were ready to close the gates for the night. I needed to move quickly and find a method to slip Taron inside before they did. I had no trouble leaving my room since I had wings, and I gave myself a tiny grin thinking of myself.

I quickly knocked myself out of it, shook my head, and hurried for my chamber, recalling Taron was also a winged fairy. He could simply fly inside my room.

My chamber was at the very top of the castle, on the left side. It was far apart from the other rooms, which I preferred. My parents couldn't hear my plans with Taron, and it took Faith at least ten minutes to get to my room, and occasionally fifteen if I decided to put up tiny pranks on days when I didn't feel like practicing.

I liked the peace and quiet, I had always grown up without friends. The only friend I had was Taron.

Faith, on the other hand, was like a second father to me; he always made sure I got the proper training, and when I got frustrated with my parents for not giving me enough attention, he taught me to channel my frustration into the training; by doing so, he claimed I was the best student he'd ever trained.

I did however wonder what it would be like to have more friends to get to know those kids who were my age and I would see them talking and laughing from my room window.

I imagined it would have been amazing to have "friends" come over and have things like slumber parties or even just meetups.

I let out a big sigh as I laid in bed waiting for Taron to fly by my window.

"You don't seem too eager to leave; are you having second thoughts?" Taron remarked this while sitting on the wooden frame of the window. "I honestly wouldn't mind if you stayed..." he said.

"And miss out on something I've been working on for four weeks, no thanks." I say that putting my luggage on my back and leaping out the window, the cold breeze hitting my face helped me feel safe while flying at such great heights. It provided me with a sense of relaxation, and I thoroughly loved it.

I closed my eyes and let my shoulder-length hair fly in the opposite direction I soared, taking deep breaths that seemed like screams of liberation. I let the moment soak in, knowing that if I got caught up in its beauty, it wouldn't stay long.

I needed to get back on the ground before anyone saw me, I thought. If I could, I'd soar over all the colonies and straight outside, but it wasn't feasible since there were "no fly zones," and if I was caught flying, they'd know I was a blue. I pulled my hood up over my head to protect my ears and let a few silky strands of my hair stroke out, they reflected the moonlight and gleamed a sea blue hue I'd never seen before, I was astonished but managed to gain a grip on myself and pull down on land.

"Here goes nothing." I sigh and begin my walk from outside the castle gate into the blue colony….
