The long awaited second child

"Pregnant...?" Jason repeated, not believing what he had just heard. That which he had been waiting and asking for had suddenly been handed to him in such an unexpected manner, making him question if it was reality. But seeing Jenny's shocked expression and her clear shock, it was clear he wasn't going to be getting a second answer from her anytime soon. So, he grabbed the chart from her and looked at the test results himself. It was strange, though he had waited so long but with it being so near, every second longer felt like torture. When his eyes landed on the pregnancy question and the result read 'positive', his anxious feeling from earlier faded and shifted into pure excitement. The long awaited second child had become a reality without any planning or preparations. All his worries and angers disappeared instantly and he hugged Jenny as tightly as he could, while she sat motionlessly on the bed, staring off into space.

As Jason was speaking words of excitement to Jenny, while holding her tightly, she didn't join in on his happy cheers. Instead she was muttering words of disbelief with widened eyes of shock, being somewhat overthrown by the news. "But how? When did this happen? Weren't we being careful?" Though she knew that she could get pregnant despite being careful, though dizziness could be a symptom of pregnancy, she had dismissed that as a possibility in this case. Not because it wasn't but because she didn't want it to be. She hoped that just like last time it was just a lack of proper rest. But it was clearly written on her chart and the accuracy percentage was so high, that there was nothing left for her to deny. The facts were staring her in the face and now all she could do was stare back at them. No amount of closing her eyes would stop this from happening. At least not in a way that she would ever consider an option or wished upon anyone, including herself.

She was pulled back to reality by Jason who had cupped her face and pulled it up towards himself to look her in the face. He looked at her with a dazzling smile, a smile so bright that it melted the wall she had built to surround her worries, causing all her emotions that were running in circles in her mind to come rushing out like an avalanche off a large mountain or a wave after a dam breaks. Though she wanted to feel excited about this news as well. Though she wanted to be smiling next to Jason, right now she was only feeling overwhelmed, disappointed and sad. Tears started rolling down her cheeks as she placed her hands on top of Jason's large, warm hands while looking into his gentle eyes.

Jason, who wasn't expecting that reaction, suddenly stopped smiling and worriedly asked her, "What's wrong? Why are you crying all of a sudden?" As he was wiping her tears with his sleeve he asked, "Are you not feeling well? Does it hurt somewhere?" Jenny shook her head and said, "No. It's nothing like that. I just wasn't expecting this. I had a plan. I wanted to work hard at my last internship, graduate, work for a few months, maybe a year and then we would start trying to get pregnant again and our son or daughter would be born in my second year at my new job." Despite crying she still knew how to make jokes. "By then Charlie would probably already be in high school. So, I would be in need of a small thing to look after in my life to fill the hole of him leaving the nest so prematurely."

Jason softly sighed as his face showed a gentle smile and he tirelessly continued wiping Jenny's tears away. "Since when did my feisty kitten become someone who cries so easily, hmm? Worrying about such a silly thing during such a happy time. Who says you can't do those things? The chart says you are just three weeks pregnant and you have three or four weeks left at your internship. You won't even be showing by the time that you are done with your work here. You can cut your summer break short and start work a bit earlier to get those months in that you want and we can make up for that time when your maternity leave starts. So, nothing is lost yet."

Hearing Jason's words, Jenny started to calm down. She didn't know what had come over her, all she could do was blame the hormones and her lack of sleep. Just as fast as Jason had caused her dam to break, he managed to rebuild it and stop the water from flowing after allowing all the pressure that had built up against it to be released. Seeing that her tears had stopped, Jason flicked her nose playfully before placing a kiss on the tip of it as he called her "Silly" once more with a chuckle. After that he grabbed her face in both hands again and placed a kiss on her lips, causing Jenny to close her dampened eyes as she let Jason's warmth and calmness enter her heart and calm her mind.
