The devil really is in the details

A few days had passed since the start of the new term and the news about Jason had spread among their friend group. Though Jenny had been quite shocked about Jason's achievement, and so were their friends when they found out about it, she couldn't be more proud that her Jason had been able to do the impossible. A word which seemed to lose all meaning when it came to him. So, while she was working hard at her first proper internship and stealing the spotlights there, Jason was working hard to finish up his graduation thesis and essentially stealing the spotlight of his entire department. From the beginning he had never ceased impressing both fellow students and teachers alike and he apparently wasn't planning on stopping now that the end was in sight.

Right now the weekend had arrived and Jason was typing away on his thesis in their home office, while Jenny was playing with Charlie as she continued to try to get him to speak. Something that she hadn't succeeded in over the summer but was determined to do before he turned one. Since his birthday was only a week away, time was running low and she was getting more frustrated with each passing day. Causing her attempts to get him to talk to become more desperate. Leaving the only tactic unused to be to threaten him into talking. A tactic she was considering more and more as her frustration grew.

As Charlie was looking at her with a confused look, calling her 'silly' without uttering a single word, Jenny buried her face in her hands. Charlie comforted her by gently patting the back of her head as she was gathering the strength to try again. Trying to keep her cool Jenny let out another sigh before pulling her hands down her face and saying with a sweet voice, which had a strong hint of desperation, "Charlie honey, come on. Do it for me. Just say one word, whichever word. I will forgive you even if your first word isn't mommy. So, just end my misery and say something." However, Charlie just continued to play with the complicated word game Jason had gotten him days before and laughed at the weird faces his mother was pulling.

Just when Jenny was about to pinch Charlie's cheeks that had turned rosy from his laughing, Jason came to check up on the two of them, stopping Jenny in the middle of her movement. As her hands were hoovering beside the apple round cheeks, Jason asked her "How are things going? Any luck getting him to speak yet?" Jenny let out another deep sigh as she dropped her head, "No. No such luck. This boy has inherited too much stubbornness from the both of us. No matter how I much I plead and ask, he just laughs at my futile attempts. Calling me 'silly' in every way imaginable except the spoken word." Jason chuckled after hearing Jenny's complaints. He crouched down next to her and pulled her against himself as she hid her face behind her hands. With his other hand he ruffled Charlie's hair as he said, "It's okay to have some fun but don't bully your mother too much. She loves you a lot, so there is much she is willing to let slide but once she gets angry even I won't be able to protect you."

After he had said these words, he lifted Jenny up from the floor and brought her back with him to the sofa, just a few meters away from where Charlie was still happily playing with his game. Under Jenny's surprised stare as she held onto his neck tightly, he placed her down on his lap, forcing her to take a break from her mission. Without saying a single word Jason placed a soft kiss on her lips before he held her tightly in his arms. Hugging her to push out his own fatigue from working and her frustrations from getting nowhere with their son. All the while rocking her slowly from side to side and patting her back ever so gently. Almost as if comforting a small child instead of his own wife. But it seemed to be just what Jenny needed as she let out a small puff of air before hugging him back. Making a smile return to the frustrated face from before.

After sitting in that position for a full ten minutes Jason softly asked her, "Are you feeling any better?" In a relaxed voice Jenny replied, "Uhn. Much better. Thank you. Your hugs always seem to soothe me and calm me down. Nothing beats it." Jason softly chuckled. "I am glad I am still useful to you. If a hug is all you need, I will give you however many you need." Jenny arrogantly replied, "Of course. That is a given. Don't you know you signed yourself to me when you married me. Half of this body is mine. So, don't ever think about keeping it from me. Just consider it a timeshare." Another chuckle came from Jason's direction.

"Oh really? Where on the marriage license does it state that because I don't remember that part. Not that I am complaining though." In the same confident voice Jenny said, "It was in the fine print. You must have missed it." Tightening his embrace and while squeezing his face against hers he said, "Ah so the devil really is in the details. You managed to tie one down just like that. I guess I will just have to be yours for the rest of my life then. Good thing I already planned on that to begin with. So, I haven't lost a thing." Like that they both laughed softly as they continued to sit in each others embrace. Basking in the bliss of their perfect little family.

Here we are with today's chapter. With Charlie's first birtday coming up the battle is drawing to an end. Who will have the last laugh? Find out in the next chapter :D
