Paper anniversary

The remaining classes of the day passed by in the blink of an eye and before they knew it the final class of the day was dismissed. This meant that the weekend had finally arrived and after that it would be spring break. Last year Easter had fallen during the same time as the spring break, but this year that wasn't the case. Meaning they would have another long weekend after this break somewhere in the course of April. But none of that matter at the moment, because there were much more important events planned for this very weekend. Those being Jason's birthday and their one year anniversary, all wrapped up into one joyous day. Though they wished to spend their first anniversary in a special way, because it was a very important birthday for the Westwood family and one that came with quite some pressure, they decided that they wouldn't do much for their anniversary on Saturday. Instead, despite their busy studying schedule, it would be pushed to the next day as they had an entire week off and could therefore celebrate it properly and make it late without it being an issue.

Though they had made this promise, Jenny wanted to surprise Jason, just like he had done for her. Even though they couldn't celebrate like she wanted to, she couldn't accept doing nothing at all. A one year anniversary is called a 'paper' anniversary and in modern days it is also themed as the clocks anniversary. As she so happened to have bought him a watch for his birthday, it already matched the modern day theme and she planned on wrapping it in a paper mache Easter egg to refer back to his proposal on Easter last year.

She had started working on it shortly after making the final payment on the watch. Taking it step by step whenever Jason was busy working or in the bathroom. Trying to not arouse his suspicions. One time she was almost caught when he had spotted some paint on the side of her face and asked her about it. She quickly covered the spot and told him that she had been playing around with her make up, before bolting into the bathroom to wash it off. Now she could finally present the gift to him and she would do so at midnight. That way she would be the first to wish him a happy birthday and give him a gift. Aside from that she had prepared something else as these were two big events and Jason had spoiled her so much on her birthday, but she wasn't sure yet if she would be able to go through with that.

As the clock continued to tick the seconds away, Jenny grew more nervous. When it was fifteen minutes before midnight Jenny made up an excuse about not feeling so well and being a bit tired and used it to go to bed before him. Telling him not to worry about her and take his time, knowing fully that he would probably follow after her in a matter of minutes. Just enough time for her to take preparations. After dinner she had already gone upstairs once to get everything ready. Now all she needed to do is put on the finishing touches. Just as she predicted, not even ten minutes later Jason had said goodbye to his parents and had come upstairs to find Jenny. Denying them the chance to wish him a happy birthday at midnight.

Of course they had been informed in advance by Jenny, asking them if she could have that moment. Having been given that privilege from the day he was born until now and not using it in the past seventeen years, they didn't see a reason to protest now that it concerned his eighteenth birthday. Especially considering he had to spend his entire birthday the way the Westwood customs dictated. The least they could do for this young couple, who wouldn't be able to spend their anniversary alone together, was give them a moment to celebrate before the hectic day of the party started.

When Jason came into their room and called out her name, she was still in the bathroom getting herself ready. She was mostly done, but was still contemplating on whether she would go through with the second surprise she had prepared or not. Finally he knocked on the bathroom door and she was forced to respond. "Jenny are you okay?" Jenny quickly dismissed his worries and told him to wait for her on the bed and that she would be out shortly. "I promise I am fine. Don't worry. I will be out in a minute. I promise." With a hint of concern he did what she had asked of him and took a seat on the edge of the bed as he kept his eyes on the bathroom door. Waiting for her to come out. When the final seconds till midnight had started counting down, Jenny took a deep breath, lit the candle on the single cupcake she had prepared and walked over to the other bathroom door. The one that led her into the other room instead of the room Jason was waiting for her. She quietly opened the door and walked to the dividing door on her tiptoes.

The lights in the rooms could be controlled from different spots in the room and even could be controlled with voice commands. However those couldn't be used at the moment as she was trying to surprise Jason. As she was counting down in her mind, 'five..four..three...' she switched off the lights in both rooms and walked in holding the lit cupcake. "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Jason, happy birthday to you." Jason was completely flabbergasted and it appeared that her surprise had been a success as he was at a complete loss for words. When the song was finished, she was standing in front of the speechless Jason and lowered herself as she told him "Make a wish. It might not be as good as yours, but I am sure that the taste will not disappoint." Before she flashed him a charming smile. But the cupcake surprise wasn't the only thing that had made Jason lose his tongue. It was the second surprise that had Jason acting this way and it was one he would never have been able to predict in a hundred years.
