Not easily angered

Madeline had started to notice that since Jenny had started having lunch with the two of them, Max had stopped paying any attention to her. His sole focus would be Jenny and with each day she gradually grew more upset. And today she received the final straw that broke the camel's back when he sat down between her and Jenny and turned his back to her literally! With a discontented look she looked at him, waiting for him to notice her and pay attention to her as well. For him to notice her change in hair that Jenny had noticed immediately. For him to at the very least greet her. But seconds turned to minutes and he remained focused on Jenny.

Even when Jenny pointed out to him, "Hey, shouldn't you talk a bit with Madeline as well? You didn't even greet your girlfriend." He didn't have any intention to change what he was doing, or better yet, what he wasn't doing. Jenny continued, "She is a lot more forgiving than I am. If Jason had come up to me and someone else and had ignored me the way you did with Madeline, I would have stormed off without a second thought and he would be in a whole world of trouble." Jenny's expression turned from smiling to distant as her thoughts started drifting. She was reminded of Jason and she started feeling a bit sad, but she had no one to blame but herself as she was the one who reminder herself of him. They had been apart for ten days by now and she was really missing him. But Max pulled her back to their conversation by saying with a chuckle, "Well, you aren't just 'someone' and Madeline knows that. That is why I chose a girl like her, because she is not easily angered."

However, even the 'not easily angered' Madeline had her limits and when she heard this response with him still not bothering to turn around and face her, she got up and did what Jenny indirectly suggested. She threw down the scarf that she had used as a napkin and stormed off with a distinct "Hmph". Jenny dropped her head onto her hand and shook it slowly, "See, I told you to pay her some attention. Now she stormed off." Max shrugged his shoulders and continued to sit by Jenny's side as he continued to eat his lunch. This was when Jenny looked at him with a look of bewilderment. "Shouldn't you go after her? She seemed quite upset."

Max was a bit startled by Jenny's look and words. He had been eating and chatting happily, but he forgot that he was supposed to be in love with that girl. If he didn't go after her when she walked away like that, it would be suspicious. So, with as much reluctance as a person could possibly have, he went after Madeline. He found her near a tree a few feet away, kicking a few small pebbles. However, instead of being the comforting and pleading boyfriend, he got angry with her. "Why did you walk away like that? If you are unhappy about something, walk away quietly. Why did you have to make such a scene, ruining my moment with Jenny." Madeline turned around shocked and with tears welling up in her eyes. "Don't you care about me at all?" She asked with a broken voice. "You knew what you were getting yourself into. Don't pretend to be innocent and in love now."

This was true. Max had told her from the beginning that the one he was after was Jenny and he needed her to act as his girlfriend to ease her suspicions and lower her guard. She wasn't particularly fond of Jenny and she had been one of the jealous people who felt she didn't deserve Jason, so she didn't mind helping Max. But she got lost in the acting and started to forget that it wasn't real. With a cracking voice she said, "I didn't plan on falling for you, but I did. Jenny is engaged too. Can't you just stop while you are ahead and be happy that you are friends with her again."

Max rolled his eyes "And then what? Be a couple for real with you?" He scoffed. The jeer in his eyes hit Madeline right where it hurt and the tears that had been welling up started to fall, making her make up run down her face. Even when she looked so sad, Max didn't have any comforting words for her. Instead he said, "Stop crying and wipe your face. You look like a mess. If Jenny comes, she'll think I did something to make you upset." Madeline raised her voice as she said, "Well, you did!" Max turned around with a glare as he replied, "Well, I don't care!" and turned around to walk away. This was when he saw Jenny looking shocked and Madeline wiped away her tears.

She spoke to herself as she said, "If I can't have you, then no one can." and an evil smirk appeared on her face. She had planned this from the moment Max had chosen to ignore Jenny's well intended words. Though she had gotten quite fond of Jenny over the past few days, right now she needed her to face a harsh truth so she could have her revenge if Max didn't know what was best for him. In order for her plan to succeed, she made her exit as obvious as possible and purposely left her scarf behind for Jenny to find as she knew that Max would never notice or care about a detail like that. But Jenny would. And the goody - goody that she was, she would surely come to bring it back to her upset friend and boy did she come at a good time. She got to see Max's true colours and even the best liar in the world couldn't clear up this mess!
