Not an option

Hearing Jenny's reply, which at least wasn't a full no, Jason responded playfully as he said, "Hey, don't look down on me. You are great, to be sure, but I have my way with people as well. I have never lacked attention from other people, be it men or women, I just don't get why this brat has to treat me this way. Like an obvious second choice." Jenny chuckled once more as she got under the covers, while Jason went to the next level of his plan to have a proper discussion about this important topic. He let out a sigh as he placed his head on Jenny's lap, who was sitting up to read a little before sleeping.

Lying high enough to be resting his head partially against her belly, while he used his hand to stroke it, Jenny looked at him with confused eyes. He had done this many times when she was pregnant with Charlie but Jenny wondered what has gotten him to behave like this now all of a sudden? Seeing the desolate look on his face, made her wonder if his joking behaviour had been nothing more than a smoke screen. So, she asked him, "Were you being serious just now?" Jason turned around to lift his face up and look at Jenny, though he was mostly avoiding her gaze as he played with the strands of her long hair. He answered softly, "I'm not even sure myself. I just know that I certainly wouldn't mind it if you would tell me you were pregnant right now."

Jenny looked at him for a moment in silence from her utter disbelief. She couldn't believe he was serious about this considering their current busy lives but since he had decided to be serious, she should answer him seriously as well. She let out a soft sigh as she brushed through his hair with her fingers. Though her running her fingers through his hair was something he liked very much, seeing Jenny's expression and feeling the tension he could already tell she wasn't about to give him any good news, so he wasn't able to enjoy it as he usually would have. Then her answer, the words he had been expecting but dreading at the same time, finally came, "You know that is not an option for me right now..."

Seeing the sad smile that came on Jason's face as he said, "That's okay. I wasn't expecting much. I just figured there was no harm in trying.", made her feel a sharp pain in her chest. Then he quickly reverted to his usual self and sat up to join her in reading a bit before it was time to sleep. Even teasing her a bit and laughing like any other day, making Jenny wonder very briefly if she had just imagined that smile and his seriousness in wanting a second child. But this thought was dismissed when she saw him staring off into the distance, while holding the book he was supposed to be reading in his hands. Showing her that he was still upset about the situation but there was nothing she could do for him regarding this.

Even if she knew that he wanted to have another child, she herself wasn't ready yet. This was simply not the right time. In fact right now was the worst timing for her. Not only was she making long days at the hospital and studying on the side in order to keep up with the different subject matters, leaving her very little time to spend with the son they already had, but getting pregnant would also mean another delay. Adding another kid to the already hectic mix, with those two things in mind, definitely didn't sound like a good idea to her. Especially after she had worked so hard to catch up after her first pregnancy, she didn't feel like starting that tiring process all over. If she got a delay now, she probably wouldn't even be able to catch up with the others since it was all internships at the moment. Which would mean that she would be forced to graduate later than her fellow classmates. Something she absolutely didn't want and could be avoided by being patient for just a little while longer.

The next few days Jason still seemed to be a little out of it. Staring off into space from time to time and giving her short replies whenever she asked him something. Though she was certain that he was unaware he was doing it, she knew she had to do something about the situation. If not for how he was behaving now, then at least for the image of his sad smile that had haunted her ever since that night. In the end she used the simplest way to her disposal to cheer her beloved Jason, who was occasionally behaving like a man-child, up. Deciding that the best way to put the matter to bed, was to take him to bed and give him a little extra affection.

So, when she came home from her internship that day, she waited for him to finish his workday as well. When he walked out of their home office with a sigh, ready to call it a day, she called out to him. When he peered through the connecting door that separated both sides of their room, she gestured for him to come closer. With a look of surprise he did as she asked, while his mind filled with wonderings about what his silly wife was up to now. Not suspecting a thing about what Jenny had in mind and finding enjoyment in the anticipation of it all.
