Misconception

Jason finally caught up with Jenny and grabbed her by her wrist before turning her around. "I said, wait! I am sorry okay. I didn't think that you would run into my grandmother. Nor that she would let her imagination run wild and bring it up like that at the table." With a teary eyed angry expression Jenny turned around, "Exactly! You didn't think! As if what we did wasn't bad enough, your grandmother imagined it to be even worse. I am mortified. All I wanted was to make a good impression on the both of them and boy what an impression I made. I am nothing more than a girl who treats someone else's home as her own to give into her urges."

Seeing that Jenny was making things a lot bigger in her mind than they were, considering his understanding of his grandparents, he cupped both sides of Jenny's face in his hands and said, "Calm down." with a strict and demanding voice. "I know my grandparents and I can tell that you have made a great first impression. My grandmother was simply joking. If she thought that way of you, would she have insisted on taking you on a walk by herself? Would she have come to the table with linked arms? As for my grandfather, he isn't even aware of what my grandmother has said. So, his impression of you remains what it was before your run to the bathroom, which is that you are a wonderful girl who I am lucky to have by my side. Now I am sorry that you got caught like that, but I am not sorry for what happened in that room and I think neither are you. I will do what is necessary for my grandmother's misconception to be resolved, even if that means embarrassing myself to explain the matter, so just stop being mad and running away. That will only make matters worse."

It didn't take long for Jason to coax and comfort Jenny. In less than fifteen minutes, they were heading back to the table, where both Jason's parents and grandparents were waiting for their return. Though still somewhat annoyed, there was a lot of truth in what Jason had said. Running away is basically admitting guilt, so it would not do her any good. It would only make his grandmother believe that her idea of what had happened was the truth. Even with the matter regarding their kiss, Jason had been right. Their kiss was something she herself hadn't rejected, at least not in a way to make Jason actually stop, because on a certain level she was a willing participant. So, she couldn't exactly be mad at him and make him take the full blame. If Jason could take away the idea that they had slept with each other in that room, she would give him a chance to resolve the matter without ruining the entire party for herself and his grandparents. So, with some residual embarrassment she followed Jason back to the table, while hiding behind his tall frame as she remained one step behind him during their entire walk back.

Jason patiently walked her back and had her sit beside his grandfather as he asked his grandmother if he could have a moment of her time. With some reluctance he said, "Grandma, Jenny is quite a shy girl when it comes to things like what has happened in that room and what could have happened. She doesn't want you or grandfather to think poorly of her. Though I know that you don't and that you were just joking, Jenny doesn't know you guys that well and has been worried about this day for weeks. So, when she heard what you implied had happened between us, she chose to run away, afraid to face you guys from embarrassment. I promised her that I would resolve your misconception and I plan to keep that promise. So, though I don't think it is anyone's business other than mine and Jenny's, I will tell you ..." Jason looked directly in his grandmother's eyes so she could tell that he was speaking the truth when he said the second part of this sentence. "...that she and I haven't taken any step that would result in great-grandchildren yet. I know this might be hard to believe, considering how long we have been together, but it is the truth. So, what happened back there was a lot more PG-13 than you might think. In the future I would appreciate it if you kept those kinds of jokes for me alone and not let her hear it."

In truth his grandmother had regretted her poor joke the moment she saw Jenny's expression, but by then it was already too late. Now she had even forced her grandson to reveal such details of their relationship against his will, all to resolve the mess she had created. And that on a day that was supposed to be nothing but joyful. She placed one hand on his shoulder and held his hand in the other as she patted his back and said with regretful eyes, "I'm sorry Jason, grandma judged the situation poorly. You know I love to tease and I meant no harm by what I said. I just saw your fierce little eyes staring at me for taking 'your' Jenny that I couldn't help myself. I will make sure that Jenny knows this as well and that she knows that I have nothing but love and admiration for her."
