Dangers of high society

Insult after insult, remark after remark. Jenny was being stabbed by every word. Like a poison their words seeped into her veins and settled into her heart. Making her second guess whatever she had done up to that point.

Did she really cause trouble for him when she ran away? Had it been her duty as his fiance to know that these years were important for him? She had missed that he had a company even though she lived with him. Though she had told herself that she would help Jason where ever she could, she had never thought about how to be of help to him nor taken any actual steps in doing so. Not when he had told her about how he planned to take revenge and not when it was clear he was aiming to be the CEO and had to go to work and take on a double minor and major. Not once had she considered to change her career path to take up a skill useful to him or to even do something on the side for his sake. While he had taken time out of his busy schedule, time he could have spent on his company, worrying about her and her studies. Helping her every day without complaint. If she took in all these points, she was indeed unfit to be by his side, wasn't she?

Those ladies they talked about all sounded so amazing and accomplished. By comparison, she was no where near Jason's level. Even if she ignored their words, the women she had met throughout this entire party had been impressive to say the least. Having all kinds of skills, degrees and accomplishments to their name. All while looking stunning and being able to keep up a conversation with frankly everyone they met. Making it seem they were all long lost friends, instead of strangers. Even knowing the names of their children and pets. They had prepared for this party so well. While she had only put on a pretty dress and spend the rest of her time before this party focusing on studying for her tests and preparing for their anniversary. Like a true ignorant person, not realizing the importance of parties such as these. Regarding them a nuisance instead of an opportunity or treating them as part of the job. Being proud of herself only for managing to catch up with the teaching level at Mountforth High and doing well on her exams. Making her too see the difference between herself, the outsider, and the women who were born into this world.

With their harsh words at the right time, they had successfully managed to make Jenny question whether she deserved to stand by Jason's side. If she wasn't a liability to him and the goal he was trying to achieve. Doubting if she would ever be able to be someone that could stand by his side proudly and actually help him. These had been thoughts in the back of her mind from the beginning. Not understanding why he had chosen her. Why he loved her. She had been able to push those words away whenever she had heard Jason's "I love you's" and him telling her how glad he was to have her by his side or just by holding him close. But now that she had found out just how amazing Jason was and being unable to talk to him about any of it all had made her more vulnerable. Bringing back her old insecurities and intensifying them. These people were adding insult to injury and even revealing mistakes she had made and wasn't even aware of. Making the distance she felt between her and Jason become larger. With their interference, what should have been a joyous evening, became something with a different kind of deep impact on their lives.

Despite all those words of warning she had gotten from Jason's grandfather, she had still managed to fall prey to their words and to the dangers of high society. Because the dangers of high society aren't being spoken badly of or just in being unable to handle the harsh words spoken about you. The real threat lies in people actually believing those words. Despite grandfather's warnings, Jenny didn't manage to protect herself from it. Even though she had stood strong during all this time, ignoring their words, turning a blind eye or standing her ground and fighting back. Every time she heard something, which held a shred of truth, she started to doubt herself. However, instead of facing those worries and concerns she would push them away. Which made those words and their damage a sleeping grenade, waiting for that one event to pull the ring, turning it into a live grenade and start the countdown till the moment it would come to a blow. And tonight that ring was pulled, now time would have to show what the damage would be.

Soon, Jenny was pulled away by her mother-in-law and she plastered on another smile on her face as she continued to mingle and socialize. Making the thoughts she had earlier be pushed to the back once more. When it was time for the party to end and they were headed back home, Jenny leaned against Jason in silence. As it had been a long day, this wasn't suspicious or reason for concern for either Jason himself or his parents. They were quietly chatting among themselves about Jason's achievements before those talks died out as well. When they arrived at Westwood mansion everyone went to their own rooms and everything seemed done. However, in Jason and Jenny's room things were just starting. As Jason had plenty to tell and explain.
