Baby fever

After leaving the hospital, Jason decided to address the issue they had communicated about briefly during their visit of little Henry. He asked Jenny "When do you think it will be our turn? I know we have talked about this before the wedding but I can tell you have been thinking about babies lately and seeing this has got me thinking as well." Jenny nodded as she gently stroked the back of Jason's hand hanging in front of her chest as he had his arm around her neck.

"Yeah, I was wondering about it more since I met up with Sophia after our honeymoon. Seeing her belly, the pictures of the nursery, it made me somewhat excited for the idea of becoming a mom myself. But that feeling of excitement comes in waves. One moment I think I am ready, the next I am overwhelmed by all the things I already have on my plate. So, for the next couple of years I am afraid we are going to have to stay strong. I mean at the moment we barely have time for each other. If we add a kid into the mix, I don't know how we will handle things."

"Yeah, it might not be possible for us now or in the next two years but after that I am definitely willing to consider it. Everyone of us is growing up and moving onto the next phase in their lives, maybe it is time for us to think about our next phase."

Jenny turned around to him in shock. "After two years you are willing to consider? Have you lost your mind? I will be starting my internships after two years. Can you imagine me running around a hospital for more than forty hours a week with a big belly?" Though she had been the first to consider having children earlier and while still being a student, she had dismissed that thought when classes actually started. She then saw how little time she had for Jason now that she was no longer free and could accommodate to his schedule. Plus, his schedule had gotten busier after the term started as he had to add classes into the busy mix he already had. Leaving very little quality time for them. She wasn't willing to give that little bit of time up as well.

She might be more fortunate than many others in having many things to her disposal and having the means to hire people to help her with the childcare but at that moment she hadn't taken all aspects in consideration. Being blinded by the dream and Sophia's glow that she didn't take into account that help didn't mean that she wouldn't be pregnant for nine months and have to go through labour and need time to recover from that. Some pregnancies barely cause symptoms where others are a nightmare from day one till the day of the birth. Who is to say what kind she will have? To plan for a pregnancy during these busy times, just because one burden has fallen off their shoulders wasn't smart. She thought Jason would be the reasonable one between the two of them or at the very least object to an early pregnancy out of his greediness for her time but now he had caught the baby fever as well, leaving her with the task to talk some sense into him.

However, Jason responded to her harsh words with a chuckle and a carefree answer. "So start your internships a year later. They won't be going anywhere." Jenny gave him a sharp glare, causing him to lift his hands as a way saying "sorry" and to take his words back. "Fine not after two years, but do you want to wait the full six years it takes for you to finish med school? Because after that you still won't be done. You will still have to do your specialization. If we wait for you to finish that, we will be ten years down the line if not more. So, no matter how I look at it, you will have a delay in your education at some point."

Hearing these words Jenny thought to herself that Jason was right. Her path to becoming a doctor didn't end after finishing med school. No matter when she got pregnant in the next ten plus years it wouldn't be convenient. So, in that case, why worry about it? At least after two years Jason would have more time, allowing them to enjoy parenthood together. If they timed it right, she could have her pregnancy during her theoretical years, making it easier for her to keep up with the classes even if her pregnancy wasn't an easy one. Once they boarded the car Jenny told Jason, "You are right. But starting after two years doesn't work for me. So, if we don't want to wait for multiple years, I suggest us starting somewhere during my second year. That way I hope to be pregnant between my second and third year, giving me a bit more flexibility." She ended her reply with a teasing look and voice as she asked him, "How about it Mr. Westwood? Can you handle being a dad so soon?"

While driving Jason pinched her cheeks as he chuckled. "I would carry the weight of the world if you needed me to. So, of course I will make sure to be ready to be the best dad in the world from the moment you tell me the good news." Though Jenny had plenty of doubts about the future, Jason being a great dad wasn't one of them. With a loving gaze she stared at him for a moment, before laying her hand over his on the gearshift and looking out of the front window with a content smile.
