Asking for trouble

Jason felt relieved and was thankful his grandmother was so understanding. He had already angered Jenny enough in a short period of time, he didn't want to have to add anger caused by others to that mix. The two of them went back to the table and saw that Jenny had already started laughing and joking again. It seemed that Jenny had already let go of what had happened and now that his grandmother had promised to take away her previous worries, the rest of the evening could still be salvaged. Lucky for all three of them, when his grandmother was questioned by his grandfather and his parents, she had not gotten into any details. She had simply told them that she had told a joke that hadn't landed well with the two of them. Because of that what had been said and what had happened in that guestroom could remain between the three of them.

The rest of the party went by joyfully, like his grandmother had intended and lasted until the late hours. When the time had come for the remaining guests to go home, Jason's grandmother proposed something no one had expected. "It is already so late and this house is so large, why don't the four of you keep an elderly man and woman company for a day. You can return home tomorrow afternoon. I want to spend some more time with my granddaughter-in-law before you whisk her away till it is time for my birthday."

The family of four looked at each other, as if communicating through their eyes and seemed to be wondering what they should do. On the one hand they were all quite tired and didn't feel like starting the relatively long journey back home, but considering the unresolved issues between Jenny and Jason they were hesitant. Especially Susan and Stephen, who were happy they managed to get through the party without causing any problems, at least not with each other. Adding a forced night together and an entire morning to the time they had to hide everything, seemed like asking for trouble. Sensing the hesitation in the air, Jason's grandmother added a little something to play on their feelings of guilt as she said, "Especially considering that my actions today have made Jenny unhappy. I have to get the chance to make up for it and redeem myself, otherwise the guilt will disturb my sleep till I have the chance again half a year from now. Who knows what that could do to my health."

With that Stephen sighed and said, "Fine, we will stay for the night mother, but we will have to leave tomorrow morning as I still have work to do in the afternoon." This was good enough for his mother who clasped her hands together and said, "Wonderful! I will instruct the maids to prepare your rooms along with sleepwear and toiletries." Afraid they might change their minds, she quickly turned and walked away to take care of their rooms, before anyone could say anything in protest of Stephen's decision. Seeing the graceful woman flee with hurried steps, they couldn't help but chuckle at the sight. Including Jenny herself.

Moments later someone came to show them to their rooms and his grandmother used the commotion to pull Jason aside. "Jason dear, before I make another mistake, do you and Jenny plan on sharing a room? I wasn't sure so just in case I prepared the room next to yours as well. All I need to do is have someone make the bed. Do I need to instruct someone to do so?" Jason contemplated for a moment, because he wasn't sure if she would be willing to sleep next to him tonight as their fight had technically not been resolved yet, but he decided to risk it. If any trouble occurred, he could always use them keeping up the act as an excuse. So, he shook his head and said, "One room is fine." before he walked off and joined the others.

A smile appeared on his grandmother's face when she heard this reply, happy to find out that her great-grandchildren couldn't be too far off if they were already sharing a bed. Despite telling herself that they were still too young and that it would probably not be before they had graduated from University, she stop her hopeful heart from letting her imagination run wild as she imagined multiple little runts run around the house and the garden they had carefully designed. Even when they ran through the flower beds, she saw how she couldn't bring herself to get angry and instead patiently thought them to respect all life. Including those of flowers and plants.

Considering how handsome her grandson was and how beautiful her granddaughter-in-law, she imagined that those children would be beautiful as well, wrapping each and everyone of them around their little fingers. She sighed as she pushed those thoughts away and walked down the hall where the four guests were being pointed to their rooms. It was no surprise that the rooms she had prepared had been the rooms that had belonged to Jason and Stephen when they stayed and lived here. By doing this, she hoped they would feel comfortable more easily. After they had each been assigned a room, the grandparents returned to their room as well. After the last door closed the large mansion that had been so crowded just a few hours ago, had now become completely silent.
