A primal instinct

Jenny sighed as she heard the door slam in the lock again, despite it being a silent door the sound was deafening. This went as bad as she had predicted. The force that Jason had used to close the door behind him showed how angry he was. She would have to make it up to him somehow. Ugh, how awkward is lunch going to be. With shoes filled with lead Jenny opened the rooftop door and went back down. She didn't feel like facing the other and their questions, so she went straight to her classroom. Luckily the door was open. She walked in and sat at her seat before dropping her head on her table. She sat there in the quiet empty classroom till she heard the first bell ring and the first students started coming back to the classroom. She straightened her body and greeted the first few of her fellow classmates.

When Elizabeth walked in after saying her goodbye to Nick, she looked over at Jenny with a hopeful glance that was asking her how it went. Jenny shook her head with a dejected smile on her face to let her know that it didn't go well. They didn't have time to talk about it as the other students were dripping in one by one and Elizabeth knew that Jenny didn't like discussing private matters in front of a crowd and class was about to start. Elizabeth made a phone gesture to tell Jenny to let her know what had happened via messages. Jenny nodded and looked at her as she returned to her seat. When she turned her face back to face the front she saw Max walk in. She quickly turned away to not make any eye contact as to avoid any reason for a conversation to start between them.

Max came in just before the second bell as he was busy talking with his friends who were in other classes. When he walked over to his seat, he could tell that Jenny was still upset. He didn't know what to say or if she wanted him to say anything at all. They had ended last period on a bad note where she was ignoring him for some reason. It seemed to all go south from the moment they were appointed as class representatives. He hadn't gotten the chance yet to ask her what had gotten her so upset and why she was ignoring him. He wanted to ask during the break, but she disappeared almost immediately. Now it was a bit awkward between them. Just when he was about to start a conversation, the teacher walked in and robbed him of yet another chance to address the subject. "Oh come on!' he thought to himself. Now he would have to wait till lunch.

He was so invested into solving whatever issue they might have because he had taken quite a fancy towards her. It had been a long time since he had come across a girl that understood and appreciated his sense of humor, and it was pretty girl to boot! How was he supposed to become more than just deskmates if they weren't on speaking terms. He didn't even know if she was still single. He had seen a ring on her finger, but that doesn't mean anything. Women love jewelry. She could have bought it for herself. If she already had a boyfriend then why would she be so friendly to him before and so flirty? Until he didn't hear it from her himself or see her with someone, he would assume that he still had a chance with her. For now he would focus on class and give her time to calm down. Maybe she wasn't upset with him, but about something completely unrelated and just needed some time to herself.

With that thought class passed by and lunch was around the corner. Max was preparing himself to ask Jenny for a talk, but before he had a chance to ask her Elizabeth was standing their desks. "Let's go Jenny. We have some catching up to do." Jenny nodded and got up to join Elizabeth for lunch and a talk. She was still dreading to face the questions and the tension, but she was sure that Elizabeth had informed the others during the small break and had given them a warning as well. Without turning back to Max, who was standing with his hand mid air as he had to swallow the words that were on the tip of his tongue, Jenny walked out of the classroom.

She didn't get far, because she had just exited the classroom when Jason came storming towards her. Judging by the look on his face he was still in a bad mood and gave Jenny and Elizabeth the image of a bull heading towards the flag waving matador. Elizabeth shuddered and said nervously "He seems furious. What did you say? He looks as if he caught you red handed. His eyes only seem to have you. I feel invisible, yet scared. A primal instinct is telling me to play possum or to take a step to the side to avoid becoming collateral damage." "I don't know either. He was upset when he left earlier, but he wasn't this angry." Jenny braced herself and tried to pretend that nothing was going on as she lifted her hand and greeted him awkwardly "Hi Jace..". But Jason did not reply and let his eyes do all the talking and what they were saying wasn't anything nice. He grabbed her hand and pulled her along.

While she was being dragged to somewhere they could talk in private, Jenny tried to figure out what was going on and to calm him down. "Jason, what's wrong. Calm down. Let go of me first." But nothing seemed to reach him. He was a man with a goal in mind and wouldn't stop before he reached it. The place that caught his eye was the music room, which had multiple soundproof cabins that could be locked from the inside. They went inside and Jason finally let go. Jenny thought they would head into one of the cabins, but saw that Jason was checking whether the others were empty one by one. The student that was about to clear his stuff and leave was startled by Jason's appearance. "Scram!" That was all that was needed for the guy to run with his tail between his legs, while stammering "O-of course Mr. Westwood. Right away." Once the student left Jason walked up to the outer door and used his student ID badge to lock the door from the inside.
