“Undoubtedly. Now call me the suspicious type, but as I told you, Fowler’s showing up as a witness well after the fact didn’t sit well with me. So I did a little snooping. It turned out he’d only lived at the address he’d given the police for less than a month before moving out.”

“So we found out.”

“I hoped that would be the case. You’re smart young men, especially Mr. Rowe, because of what he does for a living I suspect. I would have pointed you toward Fowler when I gave you the file, but I wasn’t certain you wouldn’t think I was setting him up for some reason.”

“You know, you could have told me all this at the time,” Spence said with more than a trace of anger.

“At which point, you’d have relayed everything to the police, they’d have taken one look at the source, me, and written it off, since the detectives on your father’s case hadn’t believed me to begin with.”

“So you let us muddle through on our own.”

Anton smiled. “It worked, didn’t it?”
