Gregg left right after breakfast to go home and change clothes. He promised to return as quickly as possible to accompany Spence to the bank so that Spence could rent a safety deposit box to keep the book safe.

He had been gone about ten minutes when the doorbell rang. Spence opened the door, to find Detective Dean standing there.

“May I come in?” she asked.

“Do I have a choice?”

“In this case, yes. I’d like to talk with you, unofficially.”
