Chapter 27

“I’m not surprised. They can be pretty gruesome. Especially when it’s someone you know.”

Spence walked him to the front door, asking when they got there, “What time tomorrow? And not the crack of dawn, as you put it.”

“Is nine too early for you?”

“Nope. So I’ll see you then.” He watched Gregg until he was in his car, then locked up, set the alarm, and went upstairs. 9

“I thought of something as I was getting ready for bed,” Spence said when he and Gregg were in Gregg’s car, on their way to the apartment building where Leo Fowler had lived ten years ago. “How did the guy who gave us the file know we’d be interested in Fowler?”

“Now that, Spence, is a good question. We’ll have to ask him the next time we see him.”

“What if, and this is way out there, he’s Fowler.”

“I doubt it. If he was, why call attention to himself?”
