“No kidding. After I figured out he wasn’t home, or at least not answering the door, I came back here.”

“Walking?”

“Yes. I was on the path, about to come into the yard, when I saw the back door was open and there was something…” Spence took a deep breath. “Something lying on the steps. Jeff. Although I didn’t know that until I got closer.”

“Did you check to see if he was still alive?”

“I…At first, when I looked at him, I thought he might be alive, even though half his skull was bashed in. That he was only unconscious. I called 911 and…things progressed from there.”

“From what I’ve found out, the police haven’t located the murder weapon.”

“Not that they’ve told me,” Spence replied. “I’m sure they checked the kitchen to see if anything was missing that the killer could have used.”

“Would Jeff have let someone in while you were gone?”

“I doubt it. After the thefts, he would have been very leery about doing that.”

“Thefts?”
