6 Chapter 6

She wondered if something had happened to him. Did he hit his head or something? Or he was fooling around, using her as the object of his amusement.

"Marry him?" She could not believe her ears, thinking she had heard him wrong. But when he repeated it, she knew she was not mistaken.

Subsequently, she had more questions running through her head than answers after she had left his office.

Now, what? She asked herself as she sat on a bench at a bus stop, waiting for her ride back home.

How could she even consider his offer?

That was simply laughable.

But then again, could his proposal be for real? More importantly, would he keep his word? Could she trust a man like him?

Sadly, did she have a choice?

"Think... think... think..." She tapped her forehead a few times, hoping to clear her mind. Because time was ticking, she had to decide as soon as possible.

Honestly, she barely knew that man. Before that tragic night, she did not even know what he looked like. She only knew that Dale had an older brother.

Of course, Dale introduced her to his mother, but truthfully, it was not what she expected the meeting would be.

"What are we doing here?" She asked, suddenly agitated and nervous.

Dave invited her to go out with him on a date, but out of the blue, he decided that it was time that she met his mother.

Of course, she was more than excited to meet his family. Therefore, she agreed to go along with him to his home.

"I am taking you to meet my Mom." He answered as if that should answer her question.

"You live here." Her eyes widened, unable to believe the size of the house before her, as soon as they entered the massive iron gates and continued on the long driveway.

She thought he might have come from a good family. But she never expected that he had come from a wealthy family. And he was not just rich but filthy rich.

"I know this might come as a surprise, but I did not tell you because I don't want you to think we came from two different worlds." Dale pulled her hand into his and kissed her fingers gently while staring into her eyes.

"I love you, and none of this matters to me. You are the only thing that matters to me." And just like that, she knew she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him.

It was not because of his money but because she loved him, and he loved her back. She did not care if they lived in a tiny apartment or anywhere. All she wanted was to be with him.

"Mom, this is Jules, my girlfriend." Dale introduced her to his mother. Unfortunately, his father died a long time ago. Dale assured him that she would have loved him.

On the other hand, although his mother seemed polite, she could feel the stunning middle-aged woman was not thrilled to meet her.

But during that time, his brother was out of the country. So, she did not have the chance to meet him. But he saw a few pictures of them together, but they were still young back then.

Then, everything happened so fast that she hardly had time to breathe. The next thing she knew, she was engaged to the man of her dreams.

And a few days later, her wedding already had a date. Talking about a whirlwind romance, hers was more like a storm. It came too fast that she barely had time to react.

"Aren't you excited?" Dale asked her. That morning, a day before the wedding.

"I am." She answered. Of course, she was. But she was also apprehensive, feeling like it was happening too fast. "I am just worried about your family."

She finally admitted to him what was bothering her. It was crystal clear that his mother did not like her. And she even heard that his brother wanted to stop the wedding.

Rumors said that his family thought that she was a gold-digger. But, of course, she was not. She could not care about his money. She only wanted him.

"Are you going to marry my family or me?" He asked her, looking calm while she was a mess.

"You." She answered. "I like to marry you." She answered him truthfully.

"Then stop worrying and just show up at the altar tomorrow." Dale leaned down, gently kissing her lips. "Because there is nothing more than I want but to marry you."

Then, he was gone, pulled away from her arms. Supposedly, the next time they see each other. It would be in front of the altar.

But sadly, the rest was history.

Now, she contemplated marrying again. But this time, it would be Dale's despicable brother. Could she do it? Could she agree to his proposal, knowing this would be a sham marriage?

Although it would be legal and binding, it would still be nothing but a contract. There was no love or affection, just a transaction.

"I don't know." She buried her face in her hand, unable to decide what to do.

Then, her phone rang in her pocket. Quickly, she picked it up, and with her fingers trembling, she pressed the accept button.

"Hello," She answered, seeing that it was the hospital. She carefully listened as her heart ran to what seemed like a marathon, suddenly afraid she might be too late.

"I just called to update you on your son's condition..." The doctor said on the other line.

The doctor informed her that her son was still in stable condition. But unfortunately, time was running out. Her son needed the operation badly.

"Ok, I will get the money." She said, feeling slightly relieved that nothing worse had happened yet. But restless and panicky, knowing she still had no cash to pay for the procedure.

"No. I think you misunderstood me, Ms. Morgan." The doctor interrupted her, trying to get her attention. "We just want your consent to proceed."

She did not understand. "What about the payment?" She believed there was a miscommunication. They said that she had to pay first before they could operate.

"It is already fully paid, Ms. Morgan. You have nothing more to worry about. So, the sooner we do the operation, the better." The doctor explained to her.

But she still could not grasp the situation, wondering how that could happen. "Who paid for the surgery?" She finally asked.

"I don't have that information, but you can check it later in the billing section." The doctor informed her. "So, do we have your consent to operate on your son?"

She wanted to be there, but as the doctor said, there was no more time to wait. "Ok. Please save my baby."

Besides, she still had one more thing to do before returning to the hospital.

She believed she had a matter she had to settle.
