I don’t know if Martin suspects I’m lying or not, but I’d be willing to bet he doesn’t believe me. But instead of calling me out on it, he gives me a cool but polite smile. “I won’t disturb you any further. Good day.”

This time, I stay on the porch and watch as he makes his way to the car, where his father and brother are waiting. I don’t go back inside until they drive away.
