“Thank you,” he whispers and gives me a quick kiss on the lips. “I’m calm now.” With a nod, I squeeze his side and step away. I pick up Mattis’ chair, then we sit.

Mrs. Nyman hasn’t moved. Her mouth is downturned and her eyes full of resignation, and she’s looking at us like she knows she’s lost.

“I can’t believe you knew all along but didn’t tell me,” Mattis says, in control once again. “I can’t believe you would make me feel like an outsider, like I’m worthless for being different when you knew.”

“I only wanted to protect you. I wanted what was best for you.”

“What was best for me was the permission to be able to decide for myself. To find my ownpath. And have my wants and wishes respected.”

“It seems like you found your path anyway.”

“No thanks to you.”

She hangs her head. “I know.”

Silence takes over the kitchen; neither mother nor son says anything to each other.

“Um, what mark?” I ask when I can’t take the glaring anymore.
