I have nothing against Ma Hong Yun. Whether he survive or not depend if his luck can last. For me he is just another side character in the novel expierencing their own journey. Personally i find him a little funny and harmless. His luck causing misery for others is kinda hilarious. In my opinion seeing BNB suffering and die is way more satisfying but i know it will not happen(yet). I think Ma Hong Yun will play a role involving FY. Is not yet his time to die in some stupid gu refinement. If anyone has the right to refine Ma Hong Yun,then it is our great savior FY. These two people destiny will definitely cross path.
I don't think Ma Hong Yun will survive this. Even if he is advanced, Relic Gu will at most advance him to level six. And even if something crazy happen and he advances to a higher level, he will be a nobody with no Gu and experience, and there's no way that Old Ancestor Xue Hu will lose to something like that. I can see the refinament of Fortune Rivalling Heaven failing, but i can't see how Ma Hong Yun will survive. Well, of course, a plot armor can save someone in any situation xD

Rank 8 power is fine for that (like for forcibly capturing someone no matter what), but using it for a Gu refinement in which you're largely entrusting the outcome to fate and luck is one of the /worst/ approaches they could take. Have they not done their research on this path they're trying to refine Gu for? In their positions they should know way more about this than we do--how are they not recognising this cultivation-improvement as a red flag like we are? Their lives and futures depend on it entirely, they should be being a thousand times more worried/wary/careful/contemplative than us about it!
