I don't understand why some people are concerned over the author killing fictional animals. Given the time period of the story, it's obvious that some living things have to be sacrificed for subject testing. Better animals than humans, no?

Gunpowder doesn't explode like he described. It burns fast releasing a large volume of gas quickly. When contained in a vessel, such as a grenade or bullet casing/shell, it becomes pressure. The high pressure is where the large forces come from, making the explosion.
