we can see the MC's plot armor here: he's all, well I don't need to do anything since I'm saving my mana. Without plot armor this scenario could easily end without him doing anything at all, and then he fails.

Wasn't there supposed to be a cool down for these? Like the MC has a 3 sec chanting time or smthing and this guy can do it in less than a second.
