Usually food goes bad because of bacteria/mold/ect but a high temperature can kill most of that off. Perhaps the food was warm for too long before reaching a higher temp, but still...
Yes, we went to a supermarket under the mall, but after we've ransacked the supermarket, lets have a lavender scented seance. Instead of searching through the mall for backpacks and other useful survival goods. Why bother moving all of the corpses if you're going to leave the next day.
