2Yeon: Perception

In this AU fic, Yoo Jeongyeon actually likes Im Nayeon in a romantic way but is unsure of how to act on these feelings for her. Hidden in subtle gestures, rare moments, and a lot of teasing and bullying, Jeongyeon tries to survive being in love with her unnie and at the same time hide what she thinks would be her unrequited feelings. Oh and there is also the million dollar (or won) question: what does Nayeon feel about her? The title is a variation of the English translation of the Filipino word "Pagtingin". It is a famous song by the group Ben&Ben. You can listen to it or read the lyrics to understand the meaning of the song. It is such a bop but at the same time can be relatable, especially for those who have fallen in love with a friend. The theme of the story, however, is based on the song "Out of My League" by Fitz and the Tantrums. The title already says it all, don't you think?

Adversary

"Don't you look chipper this morning," Momo commented, taking a bite out of her sandwich. Jeongyeon had just appeared in the kitchen, smiling brightly at her. Upon seeing Jeongyeon, Boo barked happily from his seat beside Momo, wagging his tail in excitement.

"All I needed was sleep, I guess," Jeongyeon said, approaching Momo's puppy. "Annyeong, Boo-yah!" she cooed in a somewhat high-pitched voice people use when talking to babies and picked him up, caressing him.

"Others still not up yet?" Momo asked as she continued to eat. She and Jeongyeon were the only ones in the kitchen. Even Tzuyu, their resident early bird was nowhere to be found.

"You were up pretty late, weren't you?" Jeongyeon observed. "By the way, who carried me to our room last night?"

She woke up earlier this morning in her bed, her clothes from last night replaced by her pajamas. No wonder she slept peacefully.

"Tzuyu, of course. With your height, she's the only one who can carry you."

Jeongyeon nodded, satisfied with her answer. "I'm going to eat ramyeon. Want some?" She set Boo down in his seat. The terrier whimpered, obviously wanting attention. Jeongyeon pat his head with a smile to appease him a little.

Momo rolled her eyes. "Of course I do, pabo. You know well enough I'll never reject food... except watermelon." She offered some of her sandwich to her pup and he didn't think twice to take a bite. "While you're at it, I want to talk to you about something I can't talk about with the others around."

Jeongyeon was rummaging through their elevated cabinet when she answered, "If this is about your relationship problems with Heechul, I'm not sure I can be of much help." She grabbed two cups of instant noodles and set it down in front of Momo. She then grabbed the electric kettle by the sink, added water in it, and plugged it in a socket nearby.

"Oh, please. Why would I ask relationship advice from you when you can't even confess to Nayeon-unnie?"

Jeongyeon had just turned on the kettle when Momo's not so subtle roast made her pause. She had known for a while that Momo knew about her feelings for Nayeon but she hoped she wouldn't bring it up, even when they were alone. Momo wasn't exactly the smartest in the group but it didn't mean she was the dumbest either. Momo and Sana share that title, she thought instinctively. Jeongyeon couldn't deny she had her moments. And it was just her luck that Momo had noticed.

"I was hoping you wouldn't talk about it," she stated, continuing her work.

"How could I not talk about it? Having feelings for Nayeon-unnie is a big deal, if you haven't noticed," Momo scoffed.

"Why does it have to be a big deal? It'll fade anyway."

"Bullshit, Jeong. You've been in love with her for years. I know, I was there. I'm your roommate, remember? I always assumed you'd get over it but you never did."

Jeongyeon quickly turned back to her, gaping. "Wait, how long have you known?" She assumed Momo had become aware the same time Jihyo and Chaeyoung noticed. Was she that obvious that the pabo Hirai Momo was the first one to notice out of the other members?

"I've known since you began to hate Jimin."

Park Jimin from BTS, as everyone knew, was Jeongyeon's mortal enemy but none of the other members knew how or what started their mutual dislike for each other. Their fans say it was because of Jeongyeon's unnecessary ad libs when they were singing "Spring Day". It wasn't technically what created a rift between them, though that is where the irritation started since she found him petty for hating her because of her singing along with them, never mind that she was pretty annoying.

If his other members didn't hold any hard feelings for her, why couldn't he do the same? Even the girls ignore their group whenever they make fun of their songs too. That wasn't enough of an indication to hate each other.

It wasn't because they had a past either, Jeongyeon would never go for a guy like Jimin or any guy for that matter. She might be bisexual- only because she had a boyfriend before and she still admires men from time to time- but she found herself attracted more to the same gender or more specifically, to Nayeon. Her having had a past relationship with him when they were still trainees- according to one fan theory- was out of the question. And him choosing to date other people than her wasn't the reason either.

Jeongyeon could almost feel herself gagging at the thought of dating Park Jimin of all people. His fans can have him for all she cares. Especially that British weirdo who wanted to look like him. He's not that good-looking, you know, she thought spitefully.

Coincidentally, the reason for her hatred- yes, she hates him- was because of Nayeon. Jeongyeon didn't really blame Nayeon for that since it wasn't really her fault. It was more of what Jimin did that involved her unnie... specifically what Jimin did to her unnie. She could handle Jimin's infuriating existence as long as he doesn't do anything towards her loved ones. But even that, he couldn't respect. Even until now, she didn't know the reason behind his hatred for her.

"How much do you know about that?"

"Not everything but I know it has something to do with Nayeon-unnie."

Jeongyeon nodded, satisfied. "Arasseo, do you want to know?"

Momo smirked. "A few years too late for that, don't you think? I wondered how it all started but I wasn't about to push you either."

Jeongyeon shrugged, her lower lip jutting out a bit. "Better late than never then." She then turned sideways to turn off the kettle. "You know that time unnie had a crush on him?" She took the kettle and poured a generous amount of hot water in her and Momo's ramyeon cups.

"You swore to be his mortal enemy just because unnie had a crush on him?"

Jeongyeon hit her forehead lightly at the comment. "Let me finish, pabo! I'm not that petty, you know."

Momo rubbed her forehead while looking at her in indignation.

Jeongyeon ignored her, however, and continued, "He knew of her attraction towards him and wanted to take advantage of it to get back at me. I have no idea why he hated me so much to be able to do that. But I didn't begin to really hate him when he asked Nayeon-unnie for that reason. He may have apologized to her- even though I explicitly told him not to bother anymore- and she accepted it, that doesn't mean I forgave him."

Momo nodded solemnly. "I still remember how you and unnie fought over that because she thought you were jealous that Jimin asked her out and not you. It was the other way around, wasn't it?"

"Whether I was jealous of him or not, that's not the point. Remember the night she went home crying because he rejected her?"

"Ne, you stormed out of the dorm and didn't come back until the next evening. You wouldn't tell us what you did that had you staying out the whole night."

"Well..."

...

Jeongyeon stormed out of the house while donning her black trench coat, ignoring the girls' queries and protests. In her anger, she'd only remembered to bring her coat and wallet then left her phone in the living room so she wasn't aware of the girls' and her managers' attempts to contact her. She had one thing in her mind and one thing only. She wanted to beat the crap out of Park Jimin.

Earlier, Nayeon had come through the front door with tears running down her cheeks. She had just come from her supposed date with Park Jimin of BTS who asked her out earlier that day. Nayeon had been quite ecstatic to be asked out, especially since their dating ban had been lifted a month prior. Not only that but she expressed to them once that she found him attractive and wouldn't mind dating him.

While Jeongyeon found it hard to hear her crush talking about someone else- her supposed enemy, no less- she won't let her unnie date him without letting her know the consequences. They quarreled a bit over that with Nayeon accusing her of being jealous because of her non-existent feelings for Jimin and Jeongyeon trying to convince Nayeon to not take up his offer lest she wanted to experience a broken heart.

Stubborn as she is, Nayeon went anyway and came home with tears in her eyes. Jeongyeon wasn't about to tell her 'I told you so'. In fact, she had hoped Jimin had enough compassion in him not to hurt her unnie when she fully knew he only asked Nayeon out because, somehow, he had gotten wind of Jeongyeon's feelings for Nayeon. The smirk he directed towards her during their latest award show told her so. She wasn't even sure if she wanted to know how he found out.

She hailed a cab when she was sure her apartment wasn't anywhere in sight and instructed the driver to take her to an address she shouldn't know, BTS' dorm.

The boys' dorm, which was located in Hannam, was half an hour away from the girls' which was in Cheongdam. Along the way, Jeongyeon thought of all the things she could do to him. Jimin must have known she was coming for him because when they arrived at their address, she found him standing on their front step, waiting for her looking incredulously smug. The absence of his other members made things better for Jeongyeon as she didn't really want anyone to see her beating him up.

She got out of the cab, slamming the door after paying the driver extra to ensure word wouldn't come out that Yoo Jeongyeon had paid a visit to Park Jimin, regardless of the reason for said visit. Trudging towards him, she backhanded him to wipe the smirk off his porcelain face and his head snapped to the side at the impact. She then grabbed his collar and hissed, "What the hell did you do to Nayeon? What happens between us should stay that way, you didn't need to drag her into this!"

Even when his lip was cut and bleeding, Jimin still managed to smirk at her. "Technically, that wasn't my intention. I just couldn't find it in myself to return her feelings so I rejected her."

"You asked her out only to reject her? How low can you get, Park?! She came home crying, you bastard! Get back at me another way and stay away from Nayeon!"

"Believe me, that was an unexpected but welcome perk. You're just too easy to rile up, Yoo."

Gritting her teeth, Jeongyeon pushed him harshly. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't bash your face in right now!" Jimin's attitude was beginning to grate on her nerves. How can he not feel remorse for what he did to Nayeon? She clenched her fists to keep herself from beating him into a pulp.

Wiping the blood dripping off his chin, Jimin tutted. "That would be obvious, don't you think?" He stepped towards her, towering over her. Jimin was known for being the shortest in his group but his height was actually 1.74 m, taller than Jeongyeon's 1.67 m stature. He could easily overpower Jeongyeon but he knows well enough not to hit a woman, no matter how much he wants to. He pulled at his collar to fix it and patted it down.

He pointed to his busted lip. "Now this is as far as you go, Yoo. You really think paying that driver extra was going to ensure the public wouldn't know about your visit here? Or that you might be the reason why I was injured?" He smirked at her, put his hand in his pocket, and stepped back.

Glaring at him with everything she had, Jeongyeon growled under her breath, "Why do you hate me so much? How can you hate me so much to hurt even the girl I love? What did I do to deserve this from you? What did she ever do to you to deserve that treatment from you?"

She was starting to tear up, Nayeon's face streaked with tears flashing through her mind. She had to close her eyes and take a deep breath to stop from breaking down in front of him. After everything he did, he doesn't deserve to see her like that.

Jimin scoffed. "Be grateful I didn't tell anyone about your feelings for her."

Continuing as if he hadn't spoken, she declared in a firm voice, "Don't try to contact her again. I don't care even if you want to apologize, if I ever find out you tried to reach out to her, that busted lip won't be the only injury you'll take home next time." Stepping forward, she delivered a jab at his diaphragm. Jimin heaved and hunched forward at the unexpected attack.

Not bothering to look down at the wheezing Jimin, Jeongyeon said, "This could've been avoided if only you left her alone, Park. Everything you throw at me, I can take. But please, for the love of God, don't dare touch even one strand of hair on her head. I'll break your bones if you do, my reputation be damned."

Turning around, she relayed her final words, "And you might want to make sure that driver doesn't open his mouth. Unless you want people to know how and why you got that wound."

And with that, she left Jimin still bent over in pain and hailed another cab. She wasn't ready to go back to the dorm with slightly bruised knuckles so she had the driver take her to the nearest train station. She opted to go back to her home in Suwon to spend the night there. Her parents would surely be surprised at her sudden visit since she forgot her phone and hadn't contacted them. She needed some time to herself anyway and while she loved her members to death, she wouldn't find peace and quiet in their rather cramped dorm.
