I have two theories about the Duke and Anastasia's mother. 1) He didn't love her because she wasn't his mistress of choice but he got her pregnant, so he got stuck with her 2) Anastasia's mother was probably the first wife, but there was a scandal and in order for the Duke to save his title, he demoted her to Mistress and took a second wife.
