I think you might be forgetting , before he got the children disowned they ambushed him, beat him with sticks, threatened to cripple his hands so he could never be a mage, knock a tooth out. He never hurt himself, all the injuries that had them disowned were caused by the children's that got disowned.

I won’t lie, don’t expect too many readers. The biggest calling point of Supreme Magus was the evil MC. Taking that out, and changing the MC’s personality will put off almost every reader of Supreme Magus. IMO, you’d be better off writing and SI or OC.
