Since the big ole' eye called Lianna one of their child, i wonder if that artifact was made to be used by children of Mana to control the fiends (wich are more than likely another of it's creations) wich would mean the fiends hunted down the explorers as a security measure of sorts, because they were normal people the artifact didn't acknowledge them as suited to handle it
