They were more interested in building temples and other public works than in building palaces for themselves. * **3rdly, they did not want to create a sense of distance between themselves and their people.** They wanted to be seen as ordinary people who were just trying to do their best for their kingdom. Living in a palace would have made them seem like they were above their people, which would have damaged their relationship with them. * **4thly, they were concerned about security.** A palace would have been a very easy target for an assassin or a foreign invader. By living in a more modest dwelling, they were able to reduce their risk of being attacked. * **Finally, they were aware of the importance of symbolism.** A king who lives in a palace sends a message that he is powerful and wealthy. However, a king who lives like a normal person sends a message that he is humble and cares about his people.
