I like the fact that he is discussing his reasons and plan with Kaia. Its shocking how often leaders just keep the why to themself. or how often authors don't spell stuff out to add annoying suspense*.

maybe a mage who study's temperature they'd have control over solid, liquid, and gas plus there's no limit to how hot something can be. they could liquify metal from heat or shatter it from cold. some poisons are only effective at certain temperatures and they'd have some control over friction and eventually weather.
