From my point of view the mc is being an idiot, I understand his desire to fight, but he is putting everything at risk for this, every person he claims to love, every person he claims to want to protect, and all for his emotion. I mean, think about it, if he hadn't been joking around, and taken things seriously, at the very least he could have rescued them both, now he risks their lives in uncertainty for the pleasure of a fight, making his sister suffer. That's not just stupid, it's cruel, for someone he claims to love.
